Alison, I think Tennessee Ernie Ford sang a variation of the the last verse that's in the DT

I was raised in a cave by an old mountain lion
'Til a high toned woman made me walk the line.

It's also at "cowpie" but they acknowledge that they got their version from the database here...

Big Bill Broonzy also did a great version, as he did with many a popular song in his time.

Tennessee Ernie's version went:

I was raised in the canebreak by an ol' momma lion
Cain't no hight-tone woman make me walk the line.

At least that's the way I've always heard it.

I just thought I'd let you know that the Mudcat psychic transmission system is still working. For no reason I suddenly thought of this song yesterday afternoon, and now here it is: a request thread. This happens fairly often for me. I don't think of a song for years and when I do someone has posted a thread on it and then I dial up and find it listed.

I've seen a couple of variations of that 3rd verse. One is:

I was raised in a cave by an mama lion
Ain't no high-tone woman make me walk the line.

and the other:

I was raised in the bottoms by a mama hound
I'm as mean as a dog but I'm gentle as a lamb

with that last line sometimes being done as:

I'm as mean as a dog and I don't back down

See if this works for you - same tune, different sentiment.

SIXTEEN STONE (parody of Sixteen Tons)

She weighs 16 stone and what do you get,
A whole lot of woman and that's a fact.
Take a closer look, you must agree,
There's no sharp corner on a woman like me!

You can't cuddle up to a bag of bones,
If her ribs stick out, leave her well alone.
We've a soft welcome for a man in need,
We're surely built for comfort if not for speed!
    CHORUS
She weighs 16 stone and what do you get,
A whole lot of woman and that's a fact.
Take a closer look, you must agree,
There are no sharp corners on a woman like me!

Well if you've seen more meat on a greasy spoon,
She won't keep you warm, get rid of her soon.
So come on guys, if you're down in the dumps,
Better get your arm around a gal with bumps.
CHORUS

Well the magazines say be skin and bone,
But big girls never have to sleep alone,
We don't disappear when we turn on our side,
And there's plenty of suspension for a bumpy ride
CHORUS

Well if you see us coming better step aside,
A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died.
One gives you desire, the other a thrill,
If the tall ones don't get you then the small ones will!
CHORUS

Enjoy!

LTS--

That's funny, my husband has been trying to tell me that. I'm putting it in our show, he does Built for Comfort and I'll do this, or vice versa, two duets with interchanged verses. Maybe Built for Comfort will work as the chorus for 16 Stone.

Along with:

Wild women don't worry, wild women don't get the blues...

Oh, and a colorful south side Chicago line:

The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'!

His is in the key of A-flat, which means he's probably playing it in A but his guitar is tuned down a step. Don't know about Broonzy's tuning habits.

A                                                             E7
Some people says the man's made out of mud
A                                                             E7
Man's made out of flash and blood
A             A7            D          Dm
Flash and blood and skin and bone
No chord - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A mind that's week and a back that's strong

Hopefully that sounds close enough.

My own version is in Am:

Intro Am E7 //:Am Am/G F E://

Am          Am/G    F          E7
People say a man is made outta mud

Am         Am/G       F          E7
Poor man's made outta muscle and blood

Am          C         D
Muscle and blood and skin and bone

E
A mind that's weak and a back that's strong

         Am Am/G    F       E
You load 16 tons and whatya get?

Am          Am/G      F         E7
Another day older and deeper in debt

Am                C             D
St. Peter don'cha call me 'cause I can't go

   E                         Am
I owe my soul to the company store (back to intro)

The 'Am E7' part at the beginning of the intro is the chord bed to the signature single note motiff: A E C A E F# Bb A    Starting on the 5th fret of the high E string and working the passage down from there.
