...here's a song I learned from Cheryl Irvine in Mountain View Arkansas

Whipporwill song

Oh the stars on the silver moon are shining
All around is the sweetness of the spring
But I'm sad and in loneliness I'm pining
For the one I shall never see again
How I long for the day when I shall met her
Though it be where the angels sweetly sing
She is mine and the thought of her grows sweeter
When it's time for the whipporwill to sing
I remember the night she made the promise
And these words said to me great joy did bring
I'll be true and you know you'll find me waiting
When it's time for the whipporwill to sing
How I long for the day when I shall meet her
Though it be where the angels sweetly sing
She is mine and the thought of her grows sweeter
When its time for the whipporwill to sing

a nice one for the autoharp...

Grandpa Jones and Ramona did a similar version.

WHEN IT'S TIME FOR THE WHIPPOORWILL TO SING
Recorded by Ramona and Grandpa Jones

Oh, the stars and the Silvery Moon is shinin'
All around as the sweetness of the Spring
But I'm sad and in loneliness I'm pinin'
For the one I know I'll never see again.

CHORUS
How I long for the day when I shall meet her
If it be where the Angels sweetly sing
She is mine and the thought of her grows sweeter
When it's time for the Whippoorwill to sing.

Then I left with the thought I'd be returning
Soon to her with the wealth of joy I'd bring
I returned but too late and now I'm pinin'
She has gone and in loneliness I'll sing.

CHORUS

I remember the night she made the promise
And those words said to me great joy did bring
I'll be true and you know you'll find me waiting
When it's time for the Whippoorwill to sing.

CHORUS

...thanks gene...I think the version I learned was probably from Grandpa Jones and it got changed in the folk process. I like it and will do it that way!

Dear Ms. Harp, I love this song! The way I sing it I learned from the Delmore Brothers (have also heard it recorded I believe by Jim and Jesse) and it will be interesting to hear your tune and arrangement! looking forward with anticipation is PETE

Sheryl Irvine has learned a lot of songs from her mother Georgia, but probably not this one. Georgia has learned a good many of her songs in the traditional manner from family and friends and is an exceptional ballad singer. They are both among the treasures to be discovered in Mountain View, Arkansas. Would not be surprised if we have the highest density of pickers and singers than any place in America.

Harpgirl, you've good taste in musical buddies and in good places to hang out. Gunnar Pool is really nice when a person can get it to themselves.
