09 Feb 00 - 10:21 PM (#175943) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: Jon Freeman It was indicated that I can try to use the FolkChat Active list for conversation during the next MCR and I intend to try to do this. The biggest thing I noticed tonight was after a couple of posts, I think we hit something like 8 people connected to the list yet we peaked at only 3 in the chat.. This service that ultimately I would hope to pass on does seem to offer a better solution to MCR chat than the standard ICQ but I need some feedback... eg Of those who were logged on, how many actualy had the AL button (top right corner on the ICQ window) pressed down and how many tried the "Join Chat" just below? I heard of one who was getting unable to join the list but was most definately connected to that list - were there any who were trying to join the Mudchat list that was not running and getting confused by the 2 lists?... I will try and I believe it is a better solution than the present IQC solution that is currently used nut without any feedback, I am forced to work on guess work... Jon |

09 Feb 00 - 10:41 PM (#175950) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: alison I couldn't get in Jon.. but anything is better than the usual chat room.. where half the people were invisible to me..... our tests of your room worked well... if only ICQ could make the active list rooms more stable.... slainte alison

09 Feb 00 - 11:06 PM (#175958) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: Mark Cohen Gee whiz, I saw this thread and got all excited because I thought "Black Jack Davy in Atlantic City" was going to be on the radio. I guess not...I once tried to get Garrison Keillor interested in doing it on A Prairie Home Companion (I told him that Atlantic City needed a folk song, since the only other song it had was "Under the Boardwalk") but he must have lost my letter. Thanks for the plug, anyway, Allan. Aloha, Mark |

10 Feb 00 - 02:24 PM (#176265) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: JedMarum Yeah Mario! Max and Bert; good show. I wouldn't take criticism of the format too seriously. Your off handed, laid back approach is appealing. There's plenty of posh radio out there for us to listen to. We tune into Mudcat Radio, because it is Mudcat Radio! |

10 Feb 00 - 06:55 PM (#176393) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: katlaughing I totally agree, Laim Devlin!! Max, thanks for playing the Prairie Lullaby. That guitar piece you are in love with? Roy Bookbinder does a fantastic version of it on his old tape "Bookeroo". It's a lot clearer sounding than the one you played, so maybe that would help in your learning it. It's one of my favs, too! Great show and I really love the easy format! katlaughing |

10 Feb 00 - 07:02 PM (#176395) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: SeanM As to ICQ Active, I've just about given up. When I log on, the "logged" indicator flashes green/red for between 30 seconds to half an hour, and then I finally get a system message that I can't log on due to "instability" or somesuch. Maybe ICQ's got it arranged so that either chat or active will work, but not both... hmmm... M |

10 Feb 00 - 09:39 PM (#176473) Subject: RE: Radio: Episode XXI - 'BlackJack' From: Jon Freeman Thanks Sean, that is the sort of thing I need to know (what if anything is going wrong). Easiest point first, ICQ has not got it arranged as a one or other, Acitive list is an additional feature and my hope is that it will prove usefull where a number of people want to get together for events like the MCR. The flashing light is more difficult. I am aware that if you are invisible and try to connect to the list sometimes it can take a long while before you are informed that you are not authorised to join the list. One problem with the Active list is that it requires somebody to run the server on thier computer. Most of the while, I have been that person. I am subject to a 3 hour ISP cut of time and am therefore not in the ideal situation to try to host it but am trying to prove that it works. I have not waited as long as you but a situation has occured after I have been disconneted where the flashing light follows without reconnection. I think the problem is ultimately one with ICQ but in my experiene it can be resolved by disonnecting from ICQ and reconnecting. Alison and Jeri (briefly) have also tried to run the server but to the best of my knowledge have not been able to reach a point where anybody else has been able to log in and I can't answer why that should be but during those times, the flashing light would be all you get. I know that this is not the ideal situation but I still believe that the AL even as it stands does solve a lot of the visibility (eg this week half the chat couldn't see the other half on IQ) problems, remove the need for somebody to keep on having to invite others (I lost a whole MCR to doing that 2 weeks ago) and cure a lot of the problems involving people getting booted for no apparent reason. I do think that is worth persuing for the "communal" events and my ultimate hope is that somebody with a permanent internet connection will take over. Jon |
