John Goodluck back

11 Feb 00 - 08:30 PM (#176910)
Subject: John Goodluck back
From: Smeebes

The various threads on the return of the British Folkies reminds me that John Goodluck has put together a CD of his early recordings (from the first half of the 1970s) and has also done a gig, but seemingly rock rather than folk. The information is here. Anyone out there remember John from the 70s ??

I can't get your 'clicky thing' to work. However, I have a 1974 album by him on the Tradition label called 'The Suffolk Miracle'. Roy Harris joined him on a few of the songs. I haven't listened to it for yonks, but I recall that I particularly liked his rendition of 'The Murder of Maria Marten'. Now that you've reminded me of him, I will give the LP another spin.

Cheers, Stewie.

Sorry I must have typed a typo. The site is http://www.trunkles.co.uk/. There are some good trad songs on that album. 'The Suffolk Miracle' itself is not often done.

John seemed to everywhere in and around Ipswich and the surrounding countryside during the '70's - quite often the pub where the folk club was (at the bottom end of Christ Church Park?) My original vinyl 'Suffolk Miracle' is scratched beyond belief, and have you seen the price of good condition copies when they do rarely appear?! So CDs aren't so bad!

Hi folkies, Tomorrow eve we record the Carlford Chant Group in action, its a Group I helped to start many years ago and now sounds so unique that I could not let this chance go by to get them on record for the 'new' CD, due out in the new year it will be different from anything gone before, a trip back to pagan times. At 64 it might be my last chance to get it right but you never know ? Keep cheerful & stay warm & positive. Regards John G

If anyone has an email or postal address for John could they please PM me or pass this address on to him: info@folkpolicerecordings.com ... I've looked on his online shop/website and can't find a contact link, unless I'm being even more gormless than usual. I don't seem to have the little card that came with the four CD reissue, either...

John, if you're reading this, would you mind getting in touch, please? I've something I'd like to ask you.

Cheers,

Spleen/Nigel

The sales of the new CD are going well with over 100 in the short time it has been released and with the BBC refusing to acknowlege it due to its pagan contents. At the end of the day real music sung from the heart overcomes prejudice, hear it on www.johngoodluck.webs.com and judge for yourself. Cheers John G

Have you tried emailing John at the address he gave on this thread, which is john.goodluck@mypostoffice.co.uk? There may be all sorts of reasons for the delay - he could be on holiday or ill or anything - one bloke sending out CDs from him home is never going to be as efficient as Amazon! Also, John uses Paypal, which does take out the money straight away. Meanwhile, when this gets sorted out, please post again to let us know - after all, this forum is a very public way of making a complaint...

The third album is 'Speed The Plough' - essential. Are John and Jo still tidying round the village of Martlesham Heath? Haven't seen them lately.

All the albums can be had from a local shop: 'Memories', at The Square, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich.

There was some question in a post above regarding John being slow to send CDs to those who ordered them. I ordered his new CD on 16 Nov 11 and it arrived today 23 Nov 11. I live in the USA. One week seems pretty fast to me, I'd say that you can order with confidence.

Hi John

I don't know if you will read this but it is nice to see that you are back performing. I do have your first two album and the Trunkles one. Last night I did visit your website and listened to the song Crow boy which is one of my favourites from the album and I also followed the lyrics. One thing struck me, in the second line you sing Cowd, meaning cold but the way it is pronounced is exactly the same as the Dutch word for cold, koud. I wonder if there are more words in the Suffolk dialect which sound like Dutch words and mean the same thing.

From: GUEST,John G

Hi Ronald, You are correct as a lot of our Suffolk words originate from North Holland, "waggon" being one of the better known ones. As we are so close to our neighbours the Suffolk peasants that survive still sing the songs that connect us across the cold north sea that we now know was once "land". These days I write the songs for the "Bards of the Heath"but haven't forgotten the unbroken link. The band are getting more and more bookings so we must be doing something right. Have a look at the youtube entries on the Bards page to familiarise yourself with the new line up. Best Wishes John G
