I can't recall the name of the gal from Baltimore I first heard sing it but I lifted within the hour. The Boarding Party adopted it and passed it around between Tom McHenry and myself. I got pretty much the same version (thouh not near as full) from an old Cape Horner, George Herbet, back in the late 70's when I was living out on the Lahinna Roadstead on Maui. The few differences I have are:

I've had this for over 30 years & never met anyone who knew it & it's taken till now that some of the blanks will get filled in. If you know any more about the woman you lifted it from, specially if she's a blonde sailor named Diane, would you let me know. I have George singing it on tape (very rough, a big bash in the hold of the Carthaginnian), along with some other gems ( among them, English versions of the 'Albertina' & the 'Good Ol Brig') if you're gonna be at Mystic this year I'll bring it along if you want. Paris did produce a tape of sea related songs and, or my money, this was her best. BP used her tune rather than the one on the sheet music although it changed (as these things do) depending on who was doing it and what they had eaten for lunch. I'd love to learn more about the song's setting in England. Its a long haul from New Orleans to Mystic but we remain hopeful. Regards, KC |

One day by the docks I was straying Here's a very crude quarter note waltz timey, pseudo abc imitation of the verse. Its hard to be notationally challenged! The big thing to remember is that the verse ends on the dominant 7th (D note). I've got it in a midi format but am challenged on how to get it into miditext and inserted in this here message What follows is my best whack. Let me know if any of this makes sense KC

Our (Boarding Party) version was learned from Paris Kearn, a fine singer of sea songs whom we met in 1989. Paris said she heard it from an English friend. Joe Hickerson, at the Library of Congress' Archive of Folk Culture, found a manuscript of the song in an English collection, but it was written in a very different tempo, and we couldn't make it scan, so we kept Paris' version. Their liner notes read, "A 'Pop' song from the 1930's passed to us by our friend Charlie Hardy of South Shields who was born in 1912. Charlie tells us that his song was sung on the Jarrow March and accompanied by the harmonica band formed by the journalists who accompanied the march. This song was subtitled 'A Sailor's Hillbilly' as the hillbilly style of song was all the rage at the time. Very nostalgic!' Incidenatlly, that CD is full of good stuff - not a loser on it. |

Mary sang this recently at the last Portsmount (NH, USA) Press Room shanty sing & I gracefully (I hardly survived me choking her, until she finally agreed) asked if she'd sing it next. "Goodbye Old Ship of Mine" was a big favorite of some of the members, and so was included every time we gathered to sing. My own preference is for the less schmaltzy part of the shanty-sing repertoire, the true shanties or work songs, but "Goodbye Old Ship" presents a nice opportunity to harmonize and it has slowly grown on me. I have a cassette copy of the Boarding Party album which includes this song, but until seeing this refreshed thread today, never before realized that the tune I know is not the original. Interesting. KC is living in temporary exile in California. His New Orleans home is built on a slab in a very low-lying area of Gentilly, not far from Lake Pontchartrain and really not far from the breach of the London Avenue Canal. So, obviously, it sustained total flood damage. KC and I are both participating subscribers to an internet message board concerned with rebuilding our neighborhood, so I know he intends to return when he can. KC and Kathi owned a lot of musical instruments, and I don't imagine they took many (if any) with them when they evacuated. (We all assumed we'd be back in a few days.) So sad. I almost have "survivor's guilt" over still owning my one-and-only guitar, which was left on my bed through the storm and stayed high and dry, about ten feet above street level and maybe four feet above the high water mark. They'll be back in town to visit for Mardi Gras, i.e., weekend after next, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. I had no idea before today that KC was a Mudcat member, or at least had been a participant back in Feb '00, so that's one more thing we'll have to talk about. |

But in any event it's a lovely ,emotional song. One has to have served in a ship for a year or two to understand how one can become so attached to her; I was in aircraft-carrier HMS Eagle from 1966-69 and I STILL miss her today , although I cannot say the same about HMS Centaur, sadly ! |
