Right next to "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" was "Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain" in a book I was reading. Some sort of mnemonic device, but for what?

The spectrum, in optics (rainbow will do). Our mnemonic for it was Roy G. Biv. Same thing.

Sort of- Really - colours of the visible spectrum ( that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see-colours of the rainbow is close enough) Also the colour code for the Bands of colour on electrical resistors plus Gold and silver for the tolerance in % (5 and 10) Eric

In junior high school science I was taught VIBGYOR as an initialism/mnemonic. Not nearly as much fun as some of the above.

I learned the resistor color code as "Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls, But Violet Gives Willingly." (Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Gray, White for zero to 9)

Dont forget HOMES for the Great Lakes.

Jeffp is right. I am wrong about resistor colour codes- I had forgotten so back just to visible spectrum folks. Eric

jeffp is correct, and I knew the rhyme quite well, but being color blind I still needed an ohmmeter. (Capacitors were more complicated)

I used to remember the periodic table as 'Harry, he likes bent boys clutching naughty oranges...' I knew I should have run away from that school sooner!
