I think more often called Patrick Furey.

Chorus
Farewell to the town of Galway
Connemara and Oranmore
Goodbye Barna, Rosmuck and Carna
I am bound for a foreign shore

Oh my name it is Patrick Furey
I love my country and liberty
But I fought for the things I love
And so an exile I must be

Oh my Mary, my darlin' girl
Shall I ever see you more
My heart grieves me, for I must leave thee
I am bound for a foreign shore

Chorus

But there's one thing I know for certain
That someday I will return
To my friends and my companions
In the place where I was born

I'll come back to the town of Galway
Connemara and Oranmore
Home to Barna, Rosmuck and Carna
There to dwell for ever more

regards Mick Bracken

Anyone got anything on Patrick Furey? Or when and where the song originated? It's a lovely melody.

I heard 2 verses on a little tape of pub songs called '50 Irish Pub Songs' by the Sean O'Neill Band but have been all over the internet and irish song books looking for the complete lyric with no luck.

The only other recording that I have run across is by Paddy Noonan called 'Portrait in Green' and I was ready to buy that just for the lyrics to this one song.

I did not know of the Dermot O'Brien recording before reading this posting. Thank you Mick for putting up the lyrics - where did you learn them or find them?

I know of a recording by Dermot Hegarty of "The Ballad of Patrick Furey". Can't find a print version under either title.

The last verse ive got sounds a little different

And let stormy clounds gather over me and let freindships prove unkind
i will know theres one who loves me in the country i leave behind.
But theres one thing i know for certain,
that one day i will return,
to my freinds and my companions in the place where i was born.

Ill come back to the town of Galway
Connemara and Oranmore.
Home to Bearna Rosmuck and Carna
There to dwell forever more.

Brigid
