Lyr/Chords Req: Blind Boy's Dog (Dave McEnery)

The "Blind Boy's Dog" is a song that my father used to sing. I have found it on only one Hank Snow album, which comes as a very expensive set. I would appreciate it if someone could help.

THE BLIND BOY'S DOG

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam in 1943
He sailed across the sea, and died for liberty
Now that you are sending heros home
I just dont understand, why dont you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

He'll sleep beneath old glory right here on daddys farm
I'll be close by to keep him from all harm
I know that he gets lonesome sleeping in some foreign land
Why dont you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam he was so strong and smart
We knew right from the start that we should do our part
They wrote he died a hero and I just dont understand
Why dont you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

It's true no more he'll lead me as he did in days of yore
He'll never be a blind boys pal no more
No one knows how much I miss him and how lonesome now I am
Why dont you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

This is from memory, but I think thats all of it.

Thanks, I am sure this is the song I am looking for but it seems something is missing. I don't think there could be two songs like this. Is there a chorus? I originally thought the title was "I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam" But can't find anything on that. This is what I remember:

I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.
You see, sir, I'm a blind boy, yes I am.
I'd like to do my part and show what's in my heart
And help my country win this war that we are in.
My Rover he can hear a mile away
And he can see at night as well as day.
I told my dog goodbye. Don't mean it if I cry.
I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.

Is it possible that the "Blind Boy's Dog" is a follow up on this one? And if so, what is the name of this one?

Apparently Hank Snow did both the Blind Boys Dog and the Blind Boys Prayer so that might be the reason for the confusion.

I checked the BEAR-FAMILY HANK SNOW BOXSETS listings...
there is NO listing that Hank Snow ever
recorded two different BLIND BOY'S DOG songs...

I have heard that it might have been recorded by
Red River Dave [McEnery]

Above lyrics [KENDALL] are CORRECT except that--
Hank apparently MIS/SPOKE in the last verse
[at least on this version]
as sometimes happens and goes un/noticed?

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam in 1943
He sailed across the sea
And died for liberty
Now that you are sending heroes home
I just can't understand
Why don't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

It's true no more he'll lead me
As he did in days of yore
He'll never be a blind boy's pal no more
But I know that he gets lonesome
Sleeping in some distant land
Please won't you send my dog home, Uncle Sam?

I gave my dog to Uncle Sam
He was so strong and smart
We knew right from the start
That we should do our part
They wrote, 'He died a hero', 'twas in the telegram
Please won't you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

He'll sleep beneath Old Glory
Right here on daddy's farm
I'll be close by to keep him from all harm
No one knows how much I miss him
And how lonesome now am I [vs I am?]
Please won't you send my dog home Uncle Sam?

BLIND BOY'S PRAYER is in no way connected
the BLIND BOY's DOG--is a TOTALLY different theme.

The Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY -- has a copy of the sheet music of "I'd Like to Give My Dog to Uncle Sam" By Dave McEnery. (New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. Inc., c1944.)

That song, performed by Ozzie Waters, is also included in the collection "Flashbacks, Vol. 6 - American War Songs 1933-1947: Hitler & Hell" Trikont CD 0280, 2000.

Allmusic.com has a sample of Red River Dave McEnery's recording of I'D LIKE TO GIVE MY DOG TO UNCLE SAM. It contains these words:

...don't mean it if I cry.
I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.

SPOKEN: I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.
They say that he can enlist just like a man....

These words match with the quote supplied by Dulci46 above. It confirms that I'D LIKE TO GIVE MY DOG TO UNCLE SAM and THE BLIND BOY'S DOG are indeed two different songs on the same theme, and apparently the latter song is a sequel to the first.

Billboard magazine gives the following details:

Red River Dave (McEnery), I'D LIKE TO GIVE MY DOG TO UNCLE SAM, announced in Billboard March 11, 1944, Savoy 130.

Hank Snow and His Rainbow Ranch Boys, THE BLIND BOY'S DOG, announced in Billboard Aug. 6, 1949, RCA Victor 21-0089.

According to several sources, McEnery wrote both songs.

I'D LIKE TO GIVE MY DOG TO UNCLE SAM

Recorded 1944
Written by Dave McEnery

I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam
You see, sir, I'm a blind boy, yes I am
I'd like to do my part
To show what's in my heart
And help my country win
This war that we are in
My Rover, he can hear a mile away
And he can see at night as well as day
I'll get along somehow
If my country needs him now
I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam

     There are heroes on the battlefield, and where the white waves toss;
But here's the greatest hero I ever ran across.
     He was just a little blind boy who loved his country so;
This is what he told them when they wouldn't let him go:

I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam
They say they can enlist just like a man
We've walked since early morn'
From way out on the farm
When we heard on the air
They need dogs over there
I've never seen Old Glory wave above
But still I know she's there for me to love
I've told my dog goodbye
I don't mean it if I cry
I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam

I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam
You see, sir, I'm a blind boy, yes I am
I'd like to do my part
To show what's in my heart
And help my country win
This war that we are in
I've never seen Old Glory wave above
But still I know she's there for me to love
I've told my dog goodbye
I don't mean it if I cry
I'd Like To Give My Dog To Uncle Sam

Used to hear Utah Phillips sing this one whenever we got to trading old country songs.
