Elvis' Old Shep and the traditional Old Blue are the top Old Dog songs of all time. Dogs rule, man. Lower him down with a silver chain...

If old-before-its-time counts, I'm for "Dead Puppies" - the crow lover in me, I guess.

Get all 'em dogs out from under that porch, Redbone, walker, and bluetick of course. Throw a rock in that brierpatch, I'll prove what I say. He's the fastest rabbit dog in Carter County today.

Howzat? Anybody know the rest of it, by the way? I think Tom T. Hall did that one too.

Take care, Timehiker

There's "Bellman" as done by the Watersons:

"So let's drink a health to our Bellman/His voice you all used to know/And it's hounds of his kind they are very hard to find/And he's gone where the good doggies go."

Sorry, I can't supply any more than that.

My favorite is the "Hound Dog Song". The campaign song of Champ Clark of Missouri when he made his run for president (of the United States, that is). Legend has it that there is some controversy about whether the song came from Arkansas or Missouri. The folks in Missouri claim it came from Arkansas. The folks in Arkansas say "no way" it came from Missouri. Actually there are several places that lay claim to the song. All having folk who claim to know the principal characters, even the dog, Jim. There is also a song called "Dog" which Martha Adcock claimes to have written about her husband, Eddie. Good song, but not very old.

How about:

Every time I go to town the boys all kick my dog around Makes no difference if it is a hound, gotta quit kickin my dog around.

This is an old one from arkansas -- Jimmy Driftwood recorded it up in Mountain View arkansas...

I recorded Old Shep on Folk Legacy 25 years ago, and thought it was sad until I ran across Old Rover by Hank Snow and Old Gilbert by Slim Dusty of OZ. Those two are real wrenchers.

"Old Brown Dog" by Ralph McTell from his "You, Well Meaning, brought me here" Album. Some say it's a bit of a dog, but I like it!

"Dogs at Midnight" by Tom Paxton - it's about mining, but dogs do get a mention.

"How much is that doggie in the window?" from my childhood.

Not necessarily an old dog, but Jesse Winchester's 'Black Dog', particularly as recorded by Wizz Jones, is an excellent song.

Black dog don't believe in sin
Who knows where the black dog's been

Subject: ADD: Rough and Reddy.. by Jerry Rasmussen^^
From: Jerry Rasmussen

Rough was old and grizzled, with a muzzle white as snow
But every hunting season, old Rough was set to go
With legs so short and stumpy, he'd stand on his hind feet
Just to look across the open fields, when the grass was thick and deep

Rough was all confused when they first brought Reddy home
All legs and tail and four big paws, too young to gnaw the bone
And when they went to bed that night, Reddy sat and cried
And they didn't get a wink of sleep, 'till Rough lay by his side

Rough would take him hunting, down by the old fence row
Or down along the weedy banks, where the pheasants liked to go
He taught him how to find the scent and how to keep the trail
And how to run the rows of corn, to flush a flock of quail

It seems like only yesterday, when Rough just up and died
They put him on the wagon, with Reddy by his side
They laid him in the grassy bank, down by the three mile crick
And Reddy sat and whimpered, and wouldn't eat a lick

And now the frost is on the vine, and the wind is stinging cold
And the gun sits in the corner, and Reddy's getting old
He likes to walk the grassy banks, where the crick runs deep and wide
And you know it won't be long 'till he's lying by Rough's side

Rough and Reddy.. by Jerry Rasmussen^^

Two old dogs for the price of one.

This one's for you, Wolfgang..

this is a poem by William Levenworth:

Yellow Dog

You keep your lofty abstract god, Myself, I choose a child of Pan, An ordinary yellow dog Who does for love what mortals can, Who stretches out her mortal frame Determined, although she's lame For one last walk beside her man.

Whose ashes grace the forest way We roamed together yesterday. And, to the wilder god I pray: Give her soul some woods to run, A stick to fetch, a patch of sun. And near her, Pan, preserve a place For me, come from a lesser race.
