From: Clinton Hammond2 I found an old tape of some Thistle & Shamrock episodes that I taped a few years ago, and on one there's a song that I'd love to add to my show.. but the tape is such cruddy quality now that a lot of the lyrics are nearly incomprehensible...
But I believe it starts something like... Can anyone hook me up here??? If I can't get this song out of my head soon, I may explode!! Take ye Care Eh! |

I know that there are a million songs called Jack Tar or some such thing... But I believe the name of this song that I'm looking for is "The Maid Of..." Did ya not read the opening lyrics that I posted and noticed that they have nothing at all to do with the song that Allen posted? -A- for effort though! Ta' Anyone else?? |

Besides that, being the father of a couple of kids I've had to learn to give them what I believe is required - you're only the requester Clinton, what would you know about your real needs? Good luck, John. |

28 Sep 10 - 10:41 PM (#2995731) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Maid Of?? By Ian McDonald? From: GUEST,MWP I found a tape of a Thistle and Shamrock show that I made long ago. I was able to extract most of the lyrics. There's still a couple that I'm not sure of. I'm still working on the chord changes. My son listened to this song when he was a young boy - now he's off to college. He still loves the tune. "By the bright fires of winter with a brandy filled glass" - Taken from Thistle & Shamrock – Title and Artist unknown MAID OF ISLAY (Iain MacDonald) By the bright fires of winter with a brandy filled glass Jolly Jack Tar has returned home at last His sea legs they twitch and his hand's never still A lifetime of sailing. He's never had his fill He crossed the wild oceans his father had seen Signed on for sailing at barely fourteen In every harbor and every small quay. Dan saw the changes rung load and clean CHORUS: I can see the Maid of Islay As she rounds the head of Broad Bay And I dreamed that I sailed with him On the ocean every way ---- Interlude ---- He recalled the herring being fished by the ton No man would go hungry with nets still to run Salted in barrels ten thousand and more Till every ship came home from many other shores. CHORUS There's a fry to be had you just ask at the quay Now we go there nary a boat to be seen But give Dan salt mooring and the following breeze And forsake us, for to sail the sea A stormy night watch with black twist in his pipe The buffeting waves. White capped angels of night He says, "If there's a God" and he feels there must be Surely then heaven is the deep on the sea. CHORUS Please see author's version below -Joe Offer- |
14 Oct 12 - 06:05 AM (#3419537) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Maid of Islay (Iain MacDonald) From: GUEST This is my song "The Maid Of Islay" which I wrote about an old man of the sea who lived down the road from me in my hometown of Stornoway on the Island of Lewis off the North West coast of Scotland. The song can be found on my album "Beneath Still Waters" which is available as a download from either iTunes or Amazon. Good Luck, and I hope that you are able to get to grips with it. If you require help with the chords then get back to me and I will post them for you and, I will also sort out one or two discrepancies in the lyrics! All the best to you..............Iain MacDonald. |

10 Sep 18 - 08:48 AM (#3949428) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Maid of Islay (Iain MacDonald) From: GUEST,kenny Iain sadly passed on about a month ago. RIP. I found this from Ian Green of "Greentrax", posted on 13th August 2018 : From Ian Green on Facebook "It is with deep sadness I have to advise you of the death of Iain MacDonald, singer/songwriter, who recorded two albums for Greentrax in the early years: 'Beneath Still Waters' and 'This Land Once Was Free', produced by his friend Dick Gaughan. Iain, who had not been in good health for some time, died peacefully in his sleep. RIP Iain". |
