Lyr Add: Nothing but the Same Old Story

Subject: Lyr Add: NOTHING BUT THE SAME OLD STORY (P Brady)
From: alison

someone asked for this in another thread.... so I started this one giving the song title in the heading....

a wonderful "anger" song from Paul Brady....... I'll do the tune if you need it

NOTHING BUT THE SAME OLD STORY
by Paul Brady

Well I was just about nineteen
when I landed on the shore
With my eyes big as headlights
Like the thousands and thousands who came before
I was gonna be something
Smiled at the man shining light in my face
As I walked down off the gangway.

I came down to their city
Where I worked for many's the year
Built a hundred house
I must have pulled off a million pints of beer
Living under suspicion
Putting up with the hatred and fear in their eyes
You can see that you're nothing but a murderer
Yeah in their eyes, we're nothing but a bunch of murderers.

CHORUS

So Hey Johnny, can't wait 'til Saturday night
Got a thirst that's raging
I know a place where we can put that right,
Wash away the confusion
Hose down those flames inside
But look out! That's right.
I said "Look out 'cos I'll tear you into pieces if you cross me."

I'm sick of watching them break up
Every time some bird brain puts us down
Making jokes on the radio
I guess it helps them all drown out the sound
Of the crumbling foundations
Any fool can see the writings on the wall
But they just don't believe that it's happening

(Oh no, too blind)

Well there's this crowd thinks I'm alright
Say they like my turn of phrase.
Take me round to their parties
like some dressed up monkey in a cage
and I play my accordion.
Oh, but when the wine seeps through the façade
It's nothing but the same old story
It's nothing but the same old story

CHORUS (don't come too close)

I got a brother in Boston
Says he'll send me on the fare
Just wrote me a letter
Making out that he's cleaning up out there
Two cars in the driveway
Summer house way down on the Cape and I know
He'd fix me up in the morning

We'll I've been thinking about it
But it seems so far to go
People say in the winter you get lost underneath the snow
And theres this girl from my home place
We've been planning to move back and give it a try
So I never got around to going
That's why I never got around to going.

CHORUS

Nice one Alison. Just one correction, if I may.
It's

"Smiled at the man scrutinizing my face"

Glad to see it posted. He plays in a EBGDAD tuning, for anyone who's interested.

Just to clarify the above tuning, before Crowhugger sues me for not being specific.
As you look down it is of course DADGBE.

Another crisis averted.

Ya want we should play it for ya too, Hasek??

LOL!!!

Akin to somebody coming up to me in the pub and asking,"Can I bum a smoke off ya mate?"...
I hand him a smoke...
He pats his pockets and then asks, "Ya got a light too?"
I hand him my lighter...
He fights with the child proofing...
I finally grab the lighter back, and while I'm lighting it I ask, "Ya want I should smoke the damn thing for ya too?!"

I have the chords as I've figured them out, but they're in standard tuning and probably in a different key than the original. Alas, I do not have Paul's voice and I make adjustments to suit my voice.

Didn't come out the way I planned. Listen to Paul's version of it and use the above chords as ref. You'll figure it out - I have confidence in you all

I've put a MIDI of the tune (plus basic accompaniment) at Mudcat MIDIs

there is a one bar intro... melody should sound like it is being played on a guitar... you'll get the idea...
