I want to know the words to "I'm a truthful fellow" I'm not sure if that's the name of the song but it goes I'm a truthful fellow, my name is true blue bill, I've never told a falsehood, and I guess I never will. Anybody know these?

Sorry, I would help you, if I had any idea. I meant to ask Dr. McNeil today, and I forgot. I will try to think to do so tomorrow. There are probably a whole bunch of people working on your question even as we speak, so hang on, the answer is bound to be out there someplace!

OK here's the story. Some years ago I was taping songs off of Backporch Music radio program which I think comes out of Chapel Hill, NC. Anyway, I just found the old tape and there are only two verses on the tape. There's a fiddle, clawhammer banjo, and the guy singing it sounds like an old mountain man. It goes: I grew up in the mountains, Up whar the snakes have legs, Where the hoot owl speaks in english, And the rooster lays boiled eggs.

I'm a truthful fellow, They call me true blue bill, I've never told falsehood, And I guess I never will

I shaved my beard and mustache, The mornin I was born, That day I beat up my old man, (I can't make out this line)

There are more verses but they got erased. I think there's something about where he goes to England and marries a queen????????? Help.............

ok..I found the other verses. The father of our country could never tell a lie and he was my great uncle So ask him why should I

I was a great adventurer I sailed the seven seas I've seen men eatin animals From lions on down to fleas

All I need is that one line about corn or something. Now, I'll shut up. Annie

OK, here it is~~I am ready to claim the prize, Peter. I walked into the OFC, and asked Dr. Bill McNeil, and he immediately, said, "Yes, that is a Gene Autry song", so I went to the card catalog, then to the song book file~~Gene Autry's Sensational Collection of Famous Original Cowboy Songs and Mountain Ballads, Book 1. Ann, if you will send your address to me at drose@artelco.com, I will send you the words, music, and guitar chords.

TRUE BLUE BILL Words and Music by Autry, Raney & Marvin. Arr. by N. Manoloff

I grew up in the mountains, Out where the snakes have legs
Where hootowls speak in English And the Roosters lay square eggs
I shaved my beard and mustache The morning I was born
And that night beat up my old man and drank his rye and corn.

CHORUS
O I'm a truthful fellow They call me true blue Bill
I never told a falsehood And I bet I never will.
O father of our country Could never tell a lie
And he was my great uncle So I ask you why should I.
[yodel] True-oo Blue-oo Billy.

I've had some great adventures, I've sailed the seven seas
I've tamed man eating monsters From lions down to fleas
I've swam the wide Pacific I've walked around the room
I waded forty feet of snow The thirty-first of June.

I used to be a flyer, And in my aeroplane
I flew across to Paris And started home again
When I got half way over The doggone motor balked
So let the darn thing set up there And I got out and walked.

One time when I was shipwrecked, On islands in the sea,
By cannibals I was captured, And was tied up to a tree
They danced and beat their tomtoms And they got rather rough
They said I would not make good steak I was too doggone tough.

Now if I just got all the BRs in the right place, you got it!

Yes, after thinking it over, I think I can handle that. The only problem is that I need to use the facilities of the Ozark Folk Center, and the charge is 10 cents per page, and 32 cents for postage. That would make the bill a whopping 52 cents each. Anything beyond that would be a donation to a wonderful place, and I would see that it got there. Those who notify me by Email before I go in on Monday, [I have three requests already] will have theirs mailed out by the following day.

Angus, if you are still out there and DID NOT get your copy of True Blue Bill from me, respond here, and I will take care of it. Same goes for anyone ELSE that I promised and did not deliver on. I know I have sent out some, including one just a week or so ago, but may have failed on some. As I remember, Annie who made the orginal request, did not ask for a copy.

(this thread also gave away my "secret" method of finding some things ~~ JAB, Just Ask Bill!)

I grew up in the mountains, where the snakes had big long legs.
Bulldogs had rubber teeth, and roosters laid square eggs.
I shaved my beard and mustache the morning I was born.
And that night I beat my old man to his rye and corn.

CHORUS
Oh, I'm a truthful fellow. They call me True Blue Bill.
I've never told a falsehood. And you bet I never will.

I used to be a flyer, and in my aeroplane,

CLOSING VERSE
The father of our country, could never tell a lie.
And he was my great-uncle, so I ask you why should I.

Yes, yes, yes... To the post dated 13-Aug 2012...
You are the ONLY post I've seen that uses the line "Bulldogs have rubber teeth".
Those are exactly the words that my dad used to sing in the station wagon when we would head off to go camping in the Okanagan. Must have been 1963... I'd av been age 6 or 7.
