'Born to Lose' was also a product of the war years. Its author was Theron Eugene 'Ted Daffin', a former member of the Blue Ridge Playboys and Bar X Cowboys who'd previously penned the classic ballad 'Worried Mind'. He wrote 'Born to Lose' after overhearing the phrase during a poker game. Daffin, who signed all his songs to Columbia, used the pseudonym 'Frankie Brown' on this number at Satherley's [Art Satherley - Columbia's A&R man] direction and recorded it a 1942 [20 Feb 1942] session in Hollywood with his own band, the Texans. It became an enormous hit in 1943, and as a standard has been recorded by everyone from Patti Page to the Ventures. --Stewie. |
