Dick G. is scheduled to perform there April 18th...and Pentangle one month later on May 18th. Johnny D's is a small venue in Somerville, MA (Boston); good food and beer. Just went last night after winnign free tix to see The Paperboys. A telented band but not all that amazing, really; a couple musicians I sewar I have seen play elsewhere...a very good lead singer/guitarist and a wonderful Uillean piper... peg |

Heard yesterday that Gaughan's playing in the Portsmouth, N.H., area in late March, so a tour may be afoot. Heard also that Sean Terrell (Tyrell?) starts a U.S. tour March 7 or so. I hear he's good, but don't know much about him. |

His e-mail. (harvey@seacoastguitar.org)I would recommend this venue over Johnny D's which, in my opinion is overpriced in terms of cover charges and food. Last time I went there (2 hour drive) to see Gaughan, there was a power cut after his third song. Gaughan walked off stage. The audience sat there for over an hour, hoping a) the electricity would be restored; b) Gaughan might do an acoustic set; or c) there might be a partial refund of a hefty door fee. None of the above occurred and a two-hour drive home ensued. Now, when Gaughan sings his working class, socialist repertoire, it is hard not to think of him as a rather hypocritical big-name folksinger, standing at the back of Johnny D's with a beer, while low income people like me, who drove a 200 miles round trip, to see him had an expensive, worthless night. |

He's had voice problems in the past, and he was likely just trying to make sure his voice held out for subsequent audiences. There's a newsgroup post by him dealing with the subject here I don't know what happened with the money, but it seems to me Johnny D.'s should have refunded it. I'd be upset too. I e-mailed Robyn Boyd at Wooden Ship, and just received the following:

I have never had a bad time there (have seen John Renbourne there, too). The Paperboys cost 8 bucks; I think Renbourne was $10--hardly expensive by Boston standards; I know each artist is different though. I have heard Mr. G. is somewhat unreliable about showing up to gigs, but not that he walked off in the middle of them; most performers make the most of such situations, don't they? I was talking to a friend yesterday who said he has a tape of Gaugan performing a slow ballad in the UK and. when he broke a string, loudly said "Fuck!" and kinda ruined the mood...sounds like a humorous moment to me... |

You mention John Renbourne in your post. Funny for I had heard that he did have a somewhat unreliable reputation and did not turn up for a show that I attended but I have not heard the same about Dick Gaughan. As for the string-breaking. I think he must be the fastest string changer in the west (or the east). I am sure you will have a wonderful night. Will you let us know what your thoughts are after the show? |

He's just about as great to listen to talk through the string changes as sing. Re the not showing up bit - I heard that he once was known for this, back in the deep, murky past. I haven't heard anything about him in recent decades that didn't refer to him as a consumate professional. I met and talked with him at concerts in 97 and 98. He seems to be one of those people who genuinely loves humans. I will walk to the Maine gig if I must. |

I had a marvelous time last night listening to Dick Gaughan perform at the sold out concert at Inn on the Blues in York ME. A local duo (and friends) Awen, consisting of Kevin Reame and Elizabeth Stewart, opened. It was the first time I've heard them outside of a noisy session, and you'd better believe they have talent! Dick came on and did what Dick does - take over with power and passion. This makes the fourth time I've seen him, and he just keeps getting better. He has a way of holding your attention until you forget where you are, and the whole world exists only on stage while he plays. Awen have been mightily influenced by Dick's music, and there were a lot of their songs they had to exclude, because they'd learned them from Dick. One of these was "Song for Ireland," but Dick graciously asked Elizabeth to join him on stage for a beautiful performance of that song. The venue was great, the sound (Harvey Reid himself was at the board) was great (a little loud at first, but it either got quieter, or I got used to it) and the music and musicianship was out of this world. I'm gushing, I know - sue me.
