Subject: Trying to replicate a problem

This is an attempt to replicate the problem I seemed to have yesterday pasting an html document into a thread. If the problem reoccurs, the rest of this message will be cut off and the thread won't load any more messages... (If not, you'll see the lyrics I have for The Outside Track which contain an initial verse and final chorus not sung by Garnet Rogers...)here goes nothin...

      And the world rolls back,
      They marry, and vanish and die,
      But their spirits shall live on the outside track
      As long as the years go by.

 The port lights glowed in the morning mist
 As it rolled on the waters green,
 And over the railing we grasped his fist
 As the dark tide came between.
 We cheered the captain, we cheered the crew
 And our mate, times out of mind.
 We cheered the land he was going to
 And the land he had left behind.
 Chorus

 We roared "Lang Syne" in a last farewell
 But my heart felt out of joint.
 I well remember the hush that fell.
 As the steamer passed the point.

 We were ten times less by one
 Who sailed out under the morning stars

Well that went smoothly. Only things different from yesterday were I erased the Meta tag line, and yesterday I was posting a a guest using Internet Explorer. Come to think of it, its odd that I was tagged as a guest, since I was using my usual computer...

for thoroughness here's the thing again with the meta tag line (can't think why that would make any bloomin difference...)

BTW, all,

Did you know that you can also practice HTML outside the threads by sending yourself a message on your personal page? Although we do benefit from seeing how results are obtained, when they are in the threads, sometimes I want to practice something that has already been explained to death and I don't reallly want the feeble/failing attempts in the thread. So I just put 'em on the PP.

Not practicing HTML. Like the title says, I was trying to spot a problem with a thread, which occurred yesterday. It appears to have been server side and temporary.

Point taken P. BUT if you want to practice HTML why tie up your net lines--you can do it on your own computer without being connected.

When you copied yer page, there was a "Close HTML" tag in what you copied, so it reads that and closes the doc... you can stii read everythign in that thread by using the "Sort" function at the top to shift the content around your "Close" tag...

Can we get a board MOD to clean up that mess??

CAll it another argument against HTML crud in the threads... Let's go with preformatted text folks....

All you need to practice HTML is a text editor (Notepad, whatever--a multi-file editor with some features and the ability to paste in HTML elements is a lot handier though, I use Note Tab Light) and a browser. You code the page you want, you open it in your browser using the normal DOS filename structure--you know, C:\directory\filename.htm (or browse for it using the "choose file" option-as in Netscape-- File, Open Page, Choose File

And incidentally, the ONLY tag which you absolutely need in an html page is (title)A Properly Coded Title(/title)

All that other stuff in the header is optional, even the (html) and (body) tags

Then you can test your pages in the privacy of your own home, on any number of different browsers, before you unleash them on the world!

That's a clever notion, Praise. If my spelling improves in future posts, that's what's done it.

And I'll also try Willie-O's ideas - using the personal message route as a way to confirm they work right on the Mudcat.

And thanks for posting the song. (Incidentally if you go to The Internet Public Library there's a book of Henry Lawson short stories among the Online Texts. A great man.)

I don't know if it's relevant in this context, Willie-O, but one thing that does close down threads is mismatched quotation marks. In other words, opening quotes in html & not closing them. I've seen it in links. That's why Joe suggests we do links here without using the quotes.

Hi - If you want to practice HTML, put it in a thread marked HTML practice. I hit those threads occasionally and delete messages that are obviously practice messages. I keep those that might be of interest to somebody. Hope you don't mind if I delete some of the messages in this thread in a few days.

Willie, I tried to fix what you posted in the "Outside Track" thread, but I can't get to it to fix it. You locked it up solid, somehow. I sent Max a request for help.
