Just a reminder that I'm on CKUT every Thursday morning with Folk Roots/Folk Branches from 9-11:30 (Eastern).

The show can be heard at 90.3 FM in Montreal and around the world in RealAudio. You can find the RealAudio link on the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

Here's something that's not guaranteed (so keep the regular link handy.) On the days it works, it automatically opens RealPlayer at 8:58 am Thursdays (to give it a couple of minutes to go online, etc) and goes straight to CKUT without bothering to open Netscape. It worked today to the tune of that hot klezmer clarinet.

Use your SystemAgent (in \Program Files\Plus!\sysagent.exe or find it in the SysTray. If you have Plus! Or, there's another Windows thingy too that auto-schedules certain programs to run at specified times - usually scandisk or such. Schedule a new program & use the command: c:\xxxxDirectory\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe(space) pnm://real.cam.org/ckut.ra Set the schedule and use Advanced for close time - it closes & goes offline by itself too.

"No Time to Tarry" is c:\INTERNET\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe(Space) pnm://208.188.234.102/live.ram Sundays at 2:58 Eastern.

(This is a BIG secret - amaze your friends. RA says it can't be done. Mike sees that it can but don't count on it, like I said.)

Today's show kicks off in about 87 minutes with Jody Stecher's version of "The Golden Vanity."

In the second hour I'll be featuring Alan Lomax's 1944 radio ballad, "The Martins & The Coys" with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Will Geer and many others.

You can join me via Real Audio from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

Gotta go, gotta radio show to go to.

Partly in response to a recent thread on Mudcat, today's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches will include a version of "Monongahela Sal" in the first half hour.

Also in the first half hour will be a brief tribute to the late Ed McCurdy.

Later in the show, percussive dancer Sandy Silva, formerly of Kevin Burke's Open House, will be dropping by to talk about how she uses her body as a musical instrument in pursuing traditional music.

And there's lots of other great music on the show as well.

The show is on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal, and in RealAudio from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website from 9-11:30 in the morning.

Hey, she's talking about it right now! Dang, I usually have a 1:1 meeting with my boss this time Thursdays (well, 9-10 central, anyway), so I'll not be able to listen to all your show all the time, Mike, but I'm glad to know of it. Is it archived at all?

Oh, and thanks for the Stan Rogers article on the website!

Dang! And now you're playing Guy Davis! I've seen him twice here in SoDak--once at the Sioux River Folk Festival, where we got to see 3 or 4 sets by him. This guy's got talent and energy to spare. One of the most engaging, playful, masterful performers I've seen in a long time.

Gonna have to make this a regular thing. Great show, Mike!

Chris,

So far, we're not archived. It's just in real time. I've exchanged messages with Max about sending him tapes so that he can archive the show on Mudcat, but I haven't gotten that together as of yet.

Tomorrow's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches (April 13) falls during CKUT's annual funding drive. That's means a little more talking and a little less music than usual.

Joining me in-studio at about 10 am will be novelist, singer-songwriter and Mississippi John Hurt interpreter extraordinaire BILL MORRISSEY.

You can hear the show from 9-11:30 (eastern) on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal, and in RealAudio from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

Tomorrow's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches should be pretty interesting.

My guest is James Talley. James was a favorite of mine back in the 1970s, but he left performing/recording for many years. He's back anow and his new album of Woody Guthrie songs, "Woody Guthrie and Songs of My Oklahoma Home," is just about my favorite new release so far this year. During the conversation, we'll hear three songs from the album, as well as a couple of James' classics from the '70s.

We'll also have a series of songs based on the Passover story by June Tabor, Odetta, Jesse Winchester, Kim & Reggie Harris, and Peter, Paul & Mary. And songs based on the Easter story by Reverend Gary Davis, the Golden Gate Quartet, and Ralph McTell.

Also tentatively scheduled are songs by Jerry Garcia-David Grisman-Tony Rice, Bernice Lewis, Bruce Molsky, Faith Petric, Kimmie Rhodes, Pete Seeger, the Sirens, Small Potatoes, Bill Staines, the Tarbox Ramblers, and more.

You can hear the show from 9-11:30 (eastern) on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal, and in RealAudio from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

Refresh, again. If you aren't listening this morning, well...why the heck not! :-)

Say, Mike, is there a playlist posted of what you spin on each show? I usually listen to your show in the background while I'm at work, and sometimes will miss who the performer is, let alone the name of the song. This week it was "The Jute Mill Song," last week it was a song whose title I suspect was "Why Jesus Wept."

Thanks for playing "Millworker," BTW. Never heard the original, just Emmylou's.

Keep up the good work!

p.s. In all seriousness, merci beaucoup, simon-pierre. Sometimes I need someone to point out the obvious to me.

My guest this week on Folk Roots/Folk Branches is James Leva of Jones & Leva. We'll be talking about his partnership with Carol Elizabeth Jones and premiering songs from "Vertie's Dream," the brand new Jones & Leva album.

In a review in the Montreal Gazette of "Journey Home," a Jones & Leva album from 1998, I wrote that "Jones and Leva are contemporary songwriters whose material is informed by centuries of Appalachian mountain musical traditions and by early commercial country and bluegrass music. There is an utterly timeless quality to almost every one of these songs."

In the liner notes to "Vertie's Dream," Suzanne Thomas said, "To my ears,Jones & Leva are the very best vocal duet on the scene today."

The segment with James Leva will be heard after 10 am. Before and after, there'll be lots of other great music on the show.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches can be heard over the air on Thursday from 9-11:30 am on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal. Or, from anywhere in RealAudio. The CKUT RealAudio feed is available from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

BTW, I'm posting this notice early this week because my computer is having an upgrade tomorrow and I'll be off-line temporarily. I'm hoping to be up and running again by Wednesday, but you never know.

As I mentioned in the Sing Out! thread, today's show will be devoted to the 50th anniversary of Sing Out! Magazine. All of the songs will be drawn from the thousands that have appeared in the magazine over the years.

And we'll have a phone conversation about the history of Sing Out! with SO editor Mark Moss.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches can be heard over the air on Thursday from 9-11:30 am (eastern) on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal. Or, from anywhere in RealAudio. The CKUT RealAudio feed is available from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

Mike!

You're just plain outdoing yourself this morning! Of the few weeks I've been listening, I don't think I've enjoyed any Thursday morning more than this one. I've loved every single song so far--many things I've never heard. Can't wait for the playlist to be posted.

Before and after the conversation with Nancy, there'll be lots of other great music on the show.

The show is on from 9-11:30 (eastern) and can be heard over the air in Montreal on CKUT, 90.3 FM, and in RealAudio from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website.

kat,

Thanks for trying to listen.

CKUT's RealAudio severs at CAM.ORG have been erratic in recent weeks. Sometimes fine, sometimes noisy, sometimes not working at all. Today they were not working at all. CKUT management has been leaving messages at CAM for the last two days and CAM has not even called back. That's the bad news.

The good news is that CKUT management is fed up and will be moving the RealAudio feed to a new ISP. They tell me that it should be done within the month.

I've been listening for an hour an a half now to a wonderful show. I tuned in and had the pleasure of blasting my office with Dolores Keane's "A Bonny Bunch of Roses" for just a second or two before I could twiddle the volume knobs on my computer speakers. I can think of little else I would rather be excoriated for playing too loudly than the singing of Dolores Keane. Great show! A wonderful alternative to the radio dial here in My Nation's Capital (Washington, DC).

Well, I be more disappointed. Couldn't get on at all. Not a peep. I even went over to real.cam & did a search on ckut & then folk. They never heard of Folk at all but said:

"Aucun résultat pour folk. Désolé."

So how come Charlie & Jon got it but I couldn't. Just what's going on here?

Abby,

I just rechecked the RealAudio link on both the Folk Roots/Folk Branches site that I run and CKUT's mainsite and it is working.

I had about 15 e-mails today from people listening in Canada, the U.S. and Wales.

Although it's working now, the RealAudio servers at CAM.ORG have been spotty in recent weeks. To the point that CKUT management will be moving to a new ISP sometime in the next few weeks. If you listen from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches site, all you should notice is more consistently good sound.

There's lots of great music planned this week, including a 21-minute excerpt from Michael Smith's stunning "Michael, Margaret, Pat & Kate."
