But short of being a little quicker to fall back to the cheesey stuff, I'm not really changing my solo show much at all... I've recently been adding new songs so I'll be playing the hell out of them...

And the front guy for our band has been cooling his heals lately, so we haven't had many gigs, let alone rehursals, it's sorta inevitable that we'll be doing pretty much the exact same stuff this year as we did last year...

Sad eh?

But 3 gigs that day, and 10 more that month ain't too shabby eh! LOL!!

There will be others, I'm sure, but these will be the main show.

But I have to admit, I feel the same way about green beer, shamrocks, green deely-bobbers, ect, ect, ect...

I once found a web site for a thing called Snakes Day... It was suggested as a reaction to the over-commercizalisation of St. Pats. day... this festival was to be held the day after St. Pats... it invoved wearing all black, drinking black, and touching snakes or reptiles... To encourage a return to the pagan attitudes that St. Pat supposidly drove out of Ireland...

I'm all over that!

Nearly but not quite. I've heard of him but he sure as hell won't have heard of me. So if that's the songs, what about the tunes that are most likely to get 'em up on their toes. One set of reels I've always found works well is

NO John Ryan's! You know what happens every time a movie comes out with a cool tune like that? Everyone that goes to Ren Faire says, "Do you know (insert tune here)."

We play Sweeney's/Johnny Redman(I think that's the title)/John Ryan's, St Mary's polka/Church St (our gospel set), Denis Murpy's Slide(one of them)/Dan O'Keefe's #2, Off to California/Boys of Blue Hill/Harvest Home amongst others. We DON'T play Danny Boy or the Unicorn. Most of the songs my Mandolin player sings in Irish. Have a good St Patrick's Day and may you only play what makes you happy! Rich

I heard once that the thing about St Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland is actually a reference to his Christianizing of the island, because in doing so he squashed the Druids, and one of the symbols of Druidism is the serpent.

Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

Yes. Don't have references in front of me, but the snake (among others) was a symbol of Cernunnos, god of (among other things)the dead, and the underworld, therefore got translated as the Christian Devil.
No gigs on The Day yet, but have a Sr. Cit. Ctr. dance the week before.
SET: Not all slip jigs, but we do Road to Lisdoonvarna,Captain O'Kane,Swallowtail Jig,Logan Water and then back to "Road.." Makes a nice change of tempo.

The Flyin' Column is at The Hotel Syracuse on St. Pat's weekend for three jobs in two days. 8:00-12:00 on Friday and 2:00-6:00 and 8:00-12:00 on Saturday.

For 30 years we've opened with "Come In". We sing a broad mix of Irish and Scottish vocal stuff. And we have a very fine fiddler for dance sets. "Stack O Barley", "Siege of Innis", "Walls of Limerick". If The Clancy's have sung it, we probably do as well. We do a lot of rebel songs that can be considered historical. The newer songs we do are more like "Song For Ireland", "Emigrant Eyes", "When New York Was Irish". We try to avoid Tin Pan Alley. An we have a few originals we do as well. We have been likened to The Clancy's with drums, The Beach Boys gone Irish, One fellow said You sound like the Kingston Trio doing it right finally. I think those are all compliments.

We are pretty busy year round. Anxious to play at the drop of a hat. But after 30 years as a band we are getting a little old in some quarters. Probably only 25 years left in us.

just a note as I head off to rehearsal -- old favorites we do include Rising of the Moon/Juice of the Barley/Jolly Tinker/Morrisons Jig/Rights of Man Hornpipe/Road to Lisdoonvarna. A couple of years ago, we added "Ireland" by Garth Brooks, and it's just killer.
