I dreamed I could play like Fielding

I'm pretty good at flying dreams. Have them fairly frequently. If I were suddenly granted the ability, I'd know just how to move my arms, shift my center of gravity, and swoop and soar all over the place.

But...I'd never had a playing dream until the other night. In a room I'd never seen I reached down and picked up my banjo and played the strings off of it. Things I'd never tried came effortlessly (no practice!!), things I thought became music. I wasn't aware there was anyone else in the room until Rick smiled and handed me a mandolin (an instrument I've rarely even held) and told me I'd like that too. Damned if I couldn't play that as well. Then a guitar. Same result. Rick played along some and we both had a great time, smiling and laughing and jamming.

Now, I've e-mailed back and forth with brother Fielding, we've left phone messages with each other, but I've never met him face to face. Strange isn't it?

Next time my subconscious goes wandering around at the end of its tether, I think I'd rather have it go to music camp than the airport.

E.S.

Dave - weird. He really does that, or at least he did that with me when I visited. "Here, try this..." Of course he had to give me a little help, but he had me playing a song on his resonator in about a half hour, and was playing along with me. I'd never played guitar before. The Merlin of stringed things...

And judging from the sound files, Banjo Bonnie/Lil Neo sent me today, you couldn't find a better teacher anywhere, El Swanno. Sure nice to see you back in here!

Sweet dreams,

"Dreeeeeeem, dream, dream, dream......"
No, Dreamer, it is not like that at all. Your dream is but a pale shadow of true Fieldingarooniness. Let me initiate you into the mysteries. What happens is, first, you must purify yourself with days of fasting and daubs of sacred unguent. Then, with trembling in your heart, you prostrate yourself approximately 3,000 times in the direction of Kingston Road. When the "Fielding Force" senses you are humble enough, then -- and only then -- are you allowed to grovel on gravel to the subshrine where SHE WHO CONTROLS THE SCHEDULE AND CAN EVEN FORCE HIS FIELDINGNESS TO DO SOME GARDENING dwells. If SHE, ETC., ETC. determines that you are 1/1000,000,000,000,000th of the way along the path towards Fieldingosity then you are put on the list. This is usually enough to cause students to expire from sheer bliss. Those who are strong enough to survive are, after long years of further purification and internal integration of self, allowed (eyes lowered) into the presence of....into the presence of....[I am unable to speak the holy words, fill in the space yourself, O you of little faith]. Following more months of preparation, and your eyes getting accustomed to the bright light emanating from each fingertip, you might be allowed to touch an instrument that he has played. Many have died from inexpressible joy at this point. I have been privileged recently to play "House of the Rising Sun" with R***F****** during a lesson. According to "RISE UP FIELDING" (The Holy Book), this entitles me to 3 rooms of carpeting and 5,000 years remission of my time in the 4th hell from the bottom. Such is the majesty of Fielding!!!!!! Look on his playing, ye mighty, and DESPAIR!!!!!!!!
yours, Peter T.

Well, I was going to say something, but Peter's post cannot be followed.......or at least I couldn't follow it. But the Fielding boy is just one helluva picker, singer, etc, and a credit to everyone but his creditors.

Dave S--don't feel alone, I have had these dreams too. There I am, sounding like Eugene O'Donnell, and then I wake up and just want to quit playing fiddle. Never had one about an instrument I can't play, tho.

Jeri is right Dave, your dream was a very real Rick Fielding Experience. But I figure anyone who can have an 'Out of Body' flying dream has connections in the dream world.
Maybe it is wise to ask yourself, What is the meaning of this dream? I believe many of our dreams hold some deeper meaning and guidance for ourselves.
I guess I am the fortunate one for I get to realize your dream once a week at my lessons.

Wow! The Fielding of Dreams is playing at Windsor Folk in May and offering a workshop the next day. I'd been debating whether to take a day off work to attend, but after Peter T.'s promo it looks like I'd be a fool to pass up the opportunity.

cheers,

david

I've given up dreaming I could ever play anything but I still hope one day I wake up and find I could sing like Rick (or Frank or Art).[I like your voice too, Dan, but it wouldn't suit what I laughingly call my repertoire].
Be glad, be very glad, you can't hear me "singing" along with your recordings!
My everloving is out 3 evenings this week so the CD player is working overtime and all my choice of material!

I agree with LN(BB). You might have actually worked out a few things in that dream. Or it may be pointing you towards something.

There used to be a song which it seemed nearly everyone would request when I performed. The problem was that I was unable to work out the chords and so had to decline. Then one night, I dreamed I was at a party and the same old request came up. But this time (in the dream) I decided to give it a try. The song went perfectly and the chords were just right.

I woke up that morning and immediately grabbed the guitar and tried the chords I had used in my dream. They were perfect!

I've heard stories about people who dreamed they could do something, woke up and were still able to do it. I used to love playing volleyball, and dreamed about it. I swear I improved because of it - it's as if I were practicing in my sleep. People also have been known to do things when hypnotized they can't do when in a normal state of conciousness. I think the ability is there all the time, but there's too much interference. We doubt ourselves, we think about paying the bills and what somebody said to us. The magic happens when we can focus in a way that tunes out all self doubt and distractions. Sometimes that happens in dreams. Too bad we can't put ourselves in that state when awake.

I DREAMED I PLAYED LIKE RICK(SUNG TO THE TUNE OF JOE HILL)
I dreamed I played like Rick one night
And better than he could be,
Said I to Rick: "I'm better than you",
"No, you still suck," said he,
"No, you still suck," said he.

"At Carnegie Hall, Rick," says I to him,
Him standing by my bed,
"My picking murdered you once and for all,"
Says Rick, "But I ain't dead,"
Says Rick, "But I ain't dead."

"My technical brilliance killed you, Rick,
My vocals as well," says I.
"Takes more than your ego to kill a man,"
Says Rick, "I didn't die,"
Says Rick, "I didn't die."

"From San Diego to Ottawa,
In every pub and bar,
Where they drink and fraternize,"
Says he, "That's where I are,"
Says he, "That's where I are."
-couldn't help myself, Fortunato

Were I Scottish, I'd be "Gobsmacked"! Were I Jewish, I'd be "Plotzing", but since I'm Canadian...I can just murmer..."I'm not worthy", fifty times!

Wow, Dave. I had this dream one time about Cybil Shepherd, that was all too real and there wasn't a mandolin in sight. Plus another one featuring Marilu Henner, in which she.......WELL, ENOUGH OF THAT!

OK, now at the risk of exploding this lovely little space I'm in right now, I gotta say: Yes..you CAN play ALL the stringed instruments. It ain't difficult. Come for a visit to 1235 Kingston Rd. and I'll have dulcimers, dobros, Kazoos (rosewood), 4, 5, and 6 string banjos, and countless other weirdo instruments pulsating in your hot little hands before you can say "Johnny Canuck". By the way Swanno, Duckboots says that you can leave your hose under the bed anytime you want!

I am on the exec of Windsor Folk and yes Rick Fielding is doing a concert in May and a guitar workshop the next day. We would like to know numbers for the workshop and numbers will be limited: it's workshop and not a lecture! If you are interested go to www.cs.uwindsor.ca/users/c/cibor/winfolk.htm and let us know.

Hey Pastorpest (and/or Rick)...

I'm definitely gonna sign up for the workshop, but could one of you tell me what time of day it will be? I usually start work at 4 p.m. on Sundays, so if it's earlier I might not have to book off.

Thanks, David

BTW, Pastorpest — who are you? We must know each other in our other lives.....

Send me a personal message if you don't wan't to put it out for general consumption.....

I dreamed I played like Fielding, too. I was in the Outfield and I kept misjudging the long fly ball. I also had a nasty tendency when at bat to chase the high outside pitches.

Actually Leej, my REAL passion in life has been baseball. When I was 14, my friend Malcolm and I were allowed to attend a Canadian try-out camp sponsored by the Chicago Cubs (in Montreal). I was a hot shot PONY league pitcher in Baie d'Urfey and he was our slugging third baseman. We were both really "up" and nervous as well. I got my one minute in the sun facing two tough inner-city French kids, who BOTH homered off me! On TWO pitches! Game, set and match over for little Ricky's dream of being a big leaguer. Malcolm never even got to bat. They timed him from home to first and sent him home (his real one).

Fortunately I found in Toronto a league (Toronto Arts Baseball League) that was so lousy, that for about 15 years I had the time of my life hitting 215 foot homers and earned the nickname "Around the Bases in Eighty Days". My team was comprised of stand-up comics, songwriters, a politician, and a Lesbian shortstop who had once been a stripper in Las Vegas! We played against teams of Authors, stagehands, reporters, and other total non-athletes.

Yeah, Rick, I knew you were a baseball guy. I just took a chance on the position. I love the TABL story! Oh, and I hope your shoulder is in better condition than mine after abusing it pitching in those early years.

You do know me from Windsor Folk. Go to the Windsor Folk web site and post an e-mail to find out about the Rick Fielding workshop. Our last worshop started about 2:00 p.m. on the Sunday afternoon. This workshop will be Sunday, May 7, 2000. The site will depend on how many participants there are.

Hi Pastor. You don't know how much I LOVE doin' those workshops! Sometimes I just wish concert flyers would say "bring your axes, and let's ALL play!" 'Course at year's end, I'd have only played half my shows that way...and I'd REALLY starve to death!

Look forward to seein' you in Windsor.
