02 Mar 00 - 01:38 AM (#187975) Subject: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: Tchaikovsky I've been doing some research on Canadian folk music and I have run across many interesting Gaelic songs. I've considered arranging them and singing them with harp. Does anyone know of any Gaelic speakers in the Niagara Region of Canada?...or even in Toronto or any other surrounding areas? I would just like to have some help with pronunciation and emphasis....just to make sure I'm not making a fool of myself. Even any advice on singing in Gaelic or resources that I could use would be helpful. Thanks! |

From: GUEST,sharon im afraid i cant help you with the niagra region..been along time since ive been there.many schools offer specialty classes..gaelic is often offered.i am going to edinburgh for classes this summer..i realize that may be a bit much but if it its worth it to you i suppose you'll do what ever...there may be something in your area=)also there are many a book on scots gaelic with tapes and instructional...hope this helps..good luck cheers sharon |

They also have an old Gaelic dictionary in their rare book collection that might be of help to you. |

Only 1/2 an hour away from Niagara, isn't it? Seems an FC would know where to point you if they don't have the skill on hand. Another route: chronic care hospital volunteer co-ordinator...they'll be able to find out who has a mother tongue other than English and whether they're able-minded enough to help you...could be a great mutual benefit thing. Who knows, maybe before you know it you'll be paid to run a weekly music class! Mind you, if you like this last possibility, stay away from the public places and go for high-end private facilities. $$$, you know? |
