I'm new to this forum, so I'll try again. I'm looking for the words to "Rubber Dolly". I can't remember the artist or writer, Help

Don't know it. Try looking in the DT Data Base using the search window at the top of the page -- put the name or any words you know into the search window and click go. WHat sort of song is it? When heard? Any lines remembered?

Well, I think maybe it's the song that Woody Guthrie recorded. I found a nice page of Woody lyrics here (click), but no rubber dolly. Not even a rubber duckie. A song title search for "Rubber Dolly" as CDNOW shows that there are several recordings available - there are sound samples of the song, too.

'Rubber Dolly' was a little western swing gem from Bob Skyles and His Skyrockets. It was written by Skyles and first recorded in San Antonio in 1938. It was reissued on 'Operators' Special', an album on the fine, but sadly short-lived, String label (compilations by Tony Russell) a subsidiary of Topic. I will transcribe it for you later if no one else can readily oblige.

Say, Stewie - check the Woody Guthrie recording at CDNOW (link above) and tell me if it's the same song, willya? thanks.

Well, I'm not Stewie, but I checked it out, it is indeed Rubber Dolly, but for a cookin' instrumental version, Joe, check out the one by Cajun Great Harry Choates. I've got that album, and listen to it frequently. It might even be in my top ten played over the last few months. Got it on now! (Side tracks, Choates was only 28 when he died, and I read somewhere that he never had a fiddle of his own, just borrowed one wherever he went. He was the first to record Jolie Blon, also.)

Here's a few verses collected over the years
I only remember the 1st two.

RUBBER DOLLY

My mommie told me-If I'd be good-y
That she would buy me-a Rubber Doll-y

Now don't you tell her-I caught/got a fellar
Or she won't buy me-no Rubber Doll-y

But someone told her-I kissed a soldier
Now she won't buy me-a Rubber Doll-y

Now he's so handsome-his hair is curly
And he calls me-his little girlie

Now, soon we'll marry-but don't tell mommy
Or she won't buy me-no Rubber Doll-y

We got married-and had a baby
Now I don't need that-Rubber Doll-y

The baby died-Oh! how I cried
Oh! how I needed-that Rubber Doll-y

I'm sure this is WAY older than 1938. My grandmother used to sing it, and her youth was pre-1920 -- another of her favorites was "Pony Boy", which got posted here some time ago.

Here's a reflex question: what is the name of the Ralph Stanley banjo tune that SOUNDS like "Rubber Dolly"?

Skyles version does not have as many verses as Gene has posted. In fact, the whole thing is quite short - 1.51. The idiotic lyrics are incidental to what is simply a glorious romp featuring Dave Hughs (trumpet/vocals). He was singing something like:

My mama told me she's gonna buy me a rubber dolly
If I'd be good
So don't you tell her I got a fellar or she won't buy me
No rubber dolly

Instrumental

My mama told me she's gonna buy me a rubber dolly
If I'd be good
So don't you tell her I got a fellar or she won't buy me
No rubber dolly
O lay 'em down, lay 'em down watch them beds when he goes through town
She will buy me a rubber dolly
So don't you tell her honey pine, got some fellars on my line
She won't buy me no rubber dolly

Instrumental

Joe, I second Dale's suggestion that you should check out Harry Choates (pron Shoats) if you haven't heard him. Remembered by some as 'a no good, wine-head son-of-a-bitch' and also as the best known and perhaps most successful of Cajun fiddlers in his short career. The last 5 of his 28 years were spent basically on a wild drunken spree. In 1951, he was arrested for non-payment of maintenance and thrown into an Austin jail, pending transfer to Beaumont. During the night, he suffered an attack of the DTs and was brutally beaten to shut him up. He fell into a coma and died. He is buried at Port Arthur. There are 2 CDs available: the wonderful Arhoolie one that Dale referred to and also one on Krazy Kat 'Harry Choates: Five-Time Loser 1940-1951' which is more western-swingish than the Arhoolie.

James

You may well be correct. I was simply going by the attribution on the 'Operator's Special' album. Maybe Skyles was simply the first to record it and the arrangement only is down to him - I don't know. The western swing bands took their material for everywhere and anywhere.

Cheers, Stewie.

Thanks all for helping me with RUBBER DOLLY. Although there were many artists that sang it, Gene Guest's version of this song is the one I remember.

Very odd - I didn't realise this was some kind of classic. It was one of the songs the girls at junior school used for clapping to.

I had forgotten all about this song. My mother sang it to me while she was doing the wash. Does anybody have the sheet music for this?

Thanks!

I also had forgotten about that song Rubber Dolly and I thought you were referring to a song called Michelin girl which I beleived was written by a local lad. The lyrics are a bit rude so I post them without his permission anyway.

Mississippi John Hurt did a version of this too, but I don't remember which album it was on. In fact I don't remember him singing any of the verses except the first (as posted by Gene), it was mostly an instrumental.

Hi -

There was a thread on this in early 1997 - maybe April - but the search doesn't go back that far. I remember it because it was my first visit here, and part of the lyrics was my first post.

Question for the computer guys - how can we find those early threads when the filter only goes back 3 years?

Wow, I learn something new everyday. I only knew some of those lines from a pop song - can't remember the band.

Campfire, if you want to use the filter functions in that way, I think you will have to enter it as a URL using the format: http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm?Title=FILTER_ TEXT&Age=DAYS_TO_SEARCH where FILTER_TEXT is the text you wish to search for and DAYS_TO_SEARCH is the number of days you wish to go back.

Please note that if you don't enter any text to search for, i.e. used http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm?Age=DAYS_TO_SEARCH, the operation is likely to time out and that the other search methods may prove to be more effective than the filter.

I guess that's my question, Jon. I remembered that there was a Rubber Dolly thread, so I knew what to look for in the Forum Search Subject (NOT the filter on the main page, that search only gave me this year's Rubber Dolly thread). If I didn't know that there had been a Rubber Dolly thread in 1997, how could I ever find it?

campfire, I think that shows why you are better off using the other search facilities. The filter on the main threads page does not go back far enough but as far as I can make out by looking at the HTML, all it does is re-requests the threads.cfm page with the additional "Title" and "Age" paramters.

Using the template I gave you should be identical to using the filter but it will allow you to look back further in time than the 3 year limit. I don't see what is to be gained by using this method but as an example, try this link: http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm?Title=Rubber Dolly&Age=4000

Somebody asked about a Ralph Stanley tune that sounds like Rubber Dolly. I don't know about Ralph, but Bill Monroe used to do a terrific up-tempo number whose tune was practically identical to R.D. Title was: Back Up and Push.

From: rabbitrunning

I also learned this one as a clapping tune (like "Oh, Playmate, come out and play with me.") Denver, Colorado, around 1966, I think. But the only part I can remember is:

My mommy told me
If I was goodie
That she would buy me
A rubber dolly.
My auntie told her
I kissed a soldier
Now she won't buy me
My rubber dolly.

The tune we sang it to was similar to the first part of "Sipping Cider through a straw."

Hmmm... I wonder if "Playmate" or the "Kruschev" version of playmate are in the DT... think I'll go check...

Playmate was, Khrushchev wasn't. I added it to an earlier thread so they'd be together. Hope I remembered the right words!

Thread creep: if you substitute "rubber" for "paper" in the old Inkspots song "paper doll" it adds a new dimension!

The following bits are collected from various sound samples at CDNOW.

Ella Fitzgerald sang a song called "My Wubba Dolly" that is included in several collections. Lyrics are attributed to "Werner/Werner".

My mommy told me if I was goody
That she would buy me a wubba dolly.
So don't you tell her I kissed a feller
Or she won't buy me that wubba dolly.

I know I've been up to tricks.
Ooh, oh, I'm in a fix.
I want that dolly. Indeed I do.
But what a feller! I want him, too.

Bill Parsons sings a version of "Rubber Dolly" that is included on the anthology "Fabulous Flips Vol. 2". Authorship is credited to "Bodewalt/Parsons." This version has a sort of western-swing, rockabilly sound.

If we go walkin' an' we start talkin'
Then she won't buy me no rubber dolly.
If we start huggin' an' cuddle-buggin'
Then mama won't buy me no rubber dolly.
So baby don't you tell her that I'm your feller,
Or she won't buy me no rubber dolly.

A arrangement nearly identical to the above is performed by Bobby Bare on the anthology, "All-American Rock 'n' Roll from Fraternity Records." There, it is called "traditional."

Johnnie Allan sings this on the anthology "Louisiana Saturday Night": (It's unmistakably the same tune.)

I've been to Texas and Alabama
Now I've come back to Louisiana...
