Lyr Req: Queen of Argyle/Argyll

Hi

We've been asked to come up with a slogan for our (University) pub, and I was thinking about an old Silly Wizard song. Think Andy M. wrote it himself - it's called "The Queen of Argyle"

The phrase I would like to use is something like: "... a place of thinkers, noble scolars and great drinkers....."

Cheers, Håvard

G'day,
It's in the DT, click here.

The author isn't mentioned here, or on the Best of Silly Wizard LP I have, but I thought it was written by Andy M.

We saw him performing twice last weekend & met him afterwards. Great performance, including The Queen of Argyll.

Cheers,
Alan

Havard,

If you go to this link, you can hear an MP3 of the song as performed by a great Nova Scotian duo (brothers), The Sons Of Maxwell. Fabulous.

Enjoy,

I actually tried to check the DT, obviously with wrong word and another spelling of Argyll.... Anyway, thanks for the help!

I envy you Alan - I've heard him a few times as well, but it's been a few years now. Does he still sing the hilarious "Errant Apprentice"?

MAN! I love this song! He did a absolutely RULING rendition of it with Gerry O'Beirne at Wolftrap in '96, I think. I do my best imitation of Andy on this song, especially the little growly things he does!

Dan et all...

Anyone who downloaded the MP3... are they singing "And the marble in her smile"??? Since when did she have false teeth? What was wrong with "Morning in her smile"??? I've heard of libertys taken with lyrics, but to change them so they don't make sence???

One would not presume to rewrite Shakespear...

Oh I LOVE this song!!!

In answer to the original question:

"A place of noble thinkers, of scholars and great drinkers, but above them all for splendor shone the Queen of all Argyll"

And it just has to be "the mornin' in her smile"

Here 'tis, from the book:

Gentlemen, it is my duty to inform you of one beauty,
Though I ask from you a favor not to seek her for a while.
Though I own to here's a creature of character and feature
For no one could paint the picture of the Queen of all Argyle.

And if you could have seen her there, boys, if you had just been there,
The swan was in her movement, and the morning in her smile.
O the roses in the garden, they bowed and asked her pardon,
For not one could match the beauty of the Queen of all Argyle.

On the evening that I mentioned, I passed with light intention,
Through a part of our dear country known for beauty and for style.
In a place of noble thinkers, of scholars and great drinkers,
But none could match the splendor of the Queen of all Argyle.

So, my lads, I needs must leave you. My intention's not to grieve you,
Nor indeed would I deceive you, for I'll see you in a while.
I must find a way to gain her, to court her and to tame her,
For I fear my heart's in danger of the Queen of all Argyle.

This is a real favorite to play. Andy has a book out, with several really top-notch songs, I highly recommend popping for the 20$ and getting it. It also has "If I were a Blackbird" and the "Loch Tay Boat song" which we also love

(line breaks added by a Joe clone. You can save yourself a lot of typing by checking if it is in the database first.)

Ugh! I obviously need education! I typed the above out so that it is singable, and it didn't work that way. Sorry, you can pretty much use the commas as a period
