Cher even sang it once on the Sonny and Cher TV show. It was a story of a woman who found an injured snake, took it home, and nursed it to health. It bit her and told her "you knew I was a snake when you picked me up". I have been unable to find a reference to this song in the DT or anywhere else online. Can anyone help, please? |

"OH, WELL," SHE CRIED. "I'LL TAKE YOU IN AND-A I'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU!" "TAKE ME IN, OH TENDER WOMAN, TAKE ME IN FOR HEAVEN SAKE. TAKE ME IN, TENDER WOMAN," SIGHED THE SNAKE. The song continues by describing how the woman, infatuated by the snake, wraps him in silk, puts him by the fire, and gives him milk and honey. After work she hurries home from her job to find the snake alert and well. Scooping him up into her arms, she kisses him, praises him for his beauty and boasts about how she saved his life. Without any hesitation, the snake gives the tender woman a vicious bite instead of a word of thanks. The woman cries about how she's going to die, asking why he would do such a thing. The snake replies:
"OH, SHUT UP, SILLY WOMAN!" |

I'll have to try to find it again. I use this parable (?) to try to explain to people who get angry at those not too honest people they choose to befriend and get hurt by same. The holders of the rights to the song, Oscar's daughters, received no royaties any of the times he performed it and Trump gave someone else credit (maybe Al Wilson) for composing the song. Oscar's family have asked him to stop using it, saying that Donald Trump was the type of person the song was warning about. Oscar's song was inspired by Aesop's fable about "The Farmer & The Snake". |
