Lyr Req: The Snake (Oscar Brown, Jr.)

From: GUEST

I am trying to locate the lyrics and music to a song I heard several times a few years back. Cher even sang it once on the Sonny and Cher TV show. It was a story of a woman who found an injured snake, took it home, and nursed it to health. It bit her and told her "you knew I was a snake when you picked me up". I have been unable to find a reference to this song in the DT or anywhere else online. Can anyone help, please?

I didn't find the tune, but there is a huge Sonny and Cher site that you might want to go fool around in. One more time.....and I haven't even had a beer!

Sorcha, thanks for the response, but it did not have the answer. It's now been over 48 hours so I am bringing this back to the top, still in hope of an answer. If no help this time I promise to quit trying.

Just when I thought the dratted song had left my head... I recall a fragment "it's I, the snake" is that what you are talking about? Probably at 2 this morning it will surface, so will post when it floats to the top of mind.

Debby McClathy had the words on the back of an old LP of hers from early '70's.No recording of it though. I'll post them as soon as I locate the LP.

Finally found part of them!
ON HER WAY TO WORK ONE MORNIN'
DOWN THE PATH ALONG SIDE OF THE LAKE,
A TENDER-HEARTED WOMAN SAW
A POOR, HALF-FROZEN SNAKE.
HIS PRETTY COLORED SKIN HAD BEEN
ALL FROSTED WITH THE DEW .
"OH, WELL," SHE CRIED. "I'LL TAKE YOU IN
AND-A I'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU!"
"TAKE ME IN, OH TENDER WOMAN,
TAKE ME IN FOR HEAVEN SAKE.
TAKE ME IN, TENDER WOMAN,"
SIGHED THE SNAKE.

The song continues by describing how the woman, infatuated by the snake, wraps him in silk, puts him by the fire, and gives him milk and honey. After work she hurries home from her job to find the snake alert and well. Scooping him up into her arms, she kisses him, praises him for his beauty and boasts about how she saved his life. Without any hesitation, the snake gives the tender woman a vicious bite instead of a word of thanks. The woman cries about how she's going to die, asking why he would do such a thing. The snake replies:

"OH, SHUT UP, SILLY WOMAN!"
SAID THAT REPTILE WITH A GRIN.
"NOW YOU KNEW DARN WELL I WAS A SNAKE
BEFORE YOU BROUGHT ME IN "

I'll keep looking for the rest.

AHA! Got them suckers!

THE SNAKE
Written by Oscar Brown, Jr.
As sung by Al Wilson

On her way to work one morning, down the path alongside the lake,
A tender-hearted woman saw a poor half-frozen snake.
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew.
"Poor thing!" she cried. "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you."

"Take me in, tender woman. Take me in, for heaven's sake.
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake.

She wrapped him all cozy in a comforter of silk,
And laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk.
She hurried home from work that night, and soon as she arrived,
She found that pretty snake she'd taken in had been revived.

"Take me in, tender woman. Take me in, for heaven's sake.
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake.

She clutched him to her bosom. "You're so beautiful!" she cried.
"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died."
She stroked his pretty skin again and kissed and held him tight.
Instead of saying thanks, the snake gave her a vicious bite.

"Take me in, tender woman. Take me in, for heaven's sake.
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake.

"I saved you," cried the woman, "And you've bitten me, but why?
You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die."
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin.
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.

"Take me in, tender woman. Take me in, for heaven's sake.
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake.

Wasn't hard at all once I had a phrase to work with!

surprised I'm the first one to say this (and hoping creep/fluff is ok since the lyrics have been posted)... but that thread heading "The Lady and the Snake" brings up bad Freudian thoughts every time the page loads...

Thanks you VERY much, Sorcha. That is the one I was looking for. Sorry I couldn't thank you sooner, I was busy yesterday and unable to get on-line. Any hope for the chords or sheet music? Now that I have the name and artist I may be able to find them too. Thanks again! Rick Campbell

I first heard this story, as well as (now watch this spelling) "THE SIGNIFYIN' MONKEY" (not too bad) by a gentleman named Oscar Brown Jr. I love his music, but lost the album. I'll have to try to find it again. I use this parable (?) to try to explain to people who get angry at those not too honest people they choose to befriend and get hurt by same. You knew what he/she was when you became his/her friend. Don't expect more.

Love, annap

I have been trying to find this song since the waitress in "Northern Exposure," sang it. I even checked all the song discs from the show, have never been able to find it. Anybody know how to find it? Thanks, Muzzy

Hi, Muzzy-
This Google Search will take you to several recordings of the song.

Click Here for one by Oscar Brown, Jr., himself. Looks like this one is from Northern Exposure.

This is a song that Donald Trump kept reciting, badly, the lyrics as a poem. The holders of the rights to the song, Oscar's daughters, received no royaties any of the times he performed it and Trump gave someone else credit (maybe Al Wilson) for composing the song.
Oscar's family have asked him to stop using it, saying that Donald Trump was the type of person the song was warning about.
Oscar's song was inspired by Aesop's fable about "The Farmer & The Snake".
