the April 1997 edition of the Digital Tradition

I know, I know. It's the middle of June. But, be that as it may, the April 1997 edition of the Digital Tradition is now up for searching and/or downloading.

In return for the extra delay, you get an additional 500 songs (6500 in all) instead of the 300 we usually add. And, when we get the MIDI files functioning, you'll get the tunes to over 3600 of them.

TRy visiting our home page (www.deltablues.com), and any of the incarnations of the search pages (keywords, titles, full text.)

You may be surprised. I know, I know. It's the middle of June. Be that as it may, the April 1997 edition of the Digital Tradition is now up for searching or downloading. In return for the delay, we've added 500 new lyrics, instead of our more usual 300--6500 in all. And when MIDI arrives (real soon now), you can hear the tunes to over 3600 of them.

Meanwhile, take a look at our new homepage at www.deltablues.com. New format. New stuff. Let us know how you like it.

I like the search box on the threads page!! It really 'feels' like it is a great time-saver...whether it actually is or not--great for comparing versions quickly as one reads threads...(I know...it's even easier to open a 2nd browser, but....)

All in all, a great improvement...thanks, Dick, Mudcat & all...(now all I want is for the 'new' entries to be in a different color in the list of titles...greedy? Who, moi?)

Howdy Dick,

It looks like you (and I suppose some other DT folks) have been really busy to add that much, to make changes here (which seem like a great idea to me, too), and to be getting midi ready for that many songs. Great job! Do you ever get to actually play and sing the songs? I hope so. You deserve it!

Allinkausay,
Bill

You mean you're supposed to SING them?

Thanx for the kind words. We'll be even better. Real Soon Now.

Dick, I don't know whether to thank you or curse you! TAs you may have noticed, this discussion format has become a major addiction for me; here I am at the office, supposedly at work, communicating with friends that I have never met (and a few that I have) and having a GREAT time (at the taxpayers expense; I am a Federal Microbiologist; don't ask). You and Max and anyone else connected with Mudcat have done a great job on the upgrade! I like the little tag line that says "Blues and Folk"; it gets the message across without being restrictive. I REALLY appreciate the search box on the thread page. Good job, guys!

I don't mean to seem churlish but..... when is Mac version of April 97 edition likely to appear? It's just I much prefer it to the DOS version (being a lazy sort of SOD)!

Still getting great enjoyment out of both DT and discussion.

When's April coming this year, Dick? What with El NiƱo, it's still March here in California, so I guess you've still got a month.

97 or 98? I thought 97 had been up for some time.

I think April is a lot later here in Cornwall as all I get on my screen is a sign flashing saying October is here! Can someone point me in the right direction please.

The April 98 version of the database hasn't come out yet, Baz, and I was trying to figure out a gentle way of asking Dick when it's coming. I think we've been overwhelming the Digitrad Elves with new songs, and they've been busily working long hours in their workshop at the South Pole. But, unlike Santa and his Merry Band, this is not a full-time job for the Digitrad Elves, so sometimes April comes a little late. Besides, Christmas comes but once a year - the database comes twice. Still, I'm anxious to see what wonderful surprises the Elves have in store for us.

Apologies. The SPRING 1998 (no more months) edition has been shipped to Max--should be up Real Soon Now. Including a Mac version. 7129 songs. 3920 tunes. Casts of thousands! Dancing Girls!

Sorry. I get a bit punchy along about this time. dick

Well, April may have come late; but ah, what a sweet April it is! Thanks to all the Digitrad Elves - Dick, Susan, Max, and is there anybody else we don't know about?

I was going to correct Ezio in another thread and say that the downloadable version of the Spring 98 database was available, but that the online version probably wasn't. I decided to check before I put my foot in my mouth. Good thing I did - the online version is available, too. If you put APR98 in the search box in the upper-right corner of this page, you'll see all the new songs that were added.
My, Max, you certainly have been busy!

THe Spring 1998 version (on the Web) isn't quite complete--we haven't finished entering all the MIDI files, although that should be complete before too long.

It takes longer than we'd like because there are really three separate Digital Traditions: A DOS version, a Mac version and an Internet version, each of which requires additional programing. (The ASCII version, which we'll post shortly, isn't really much extra work. )

In addition, the melodies have to be in three different formats.

Not an excuse; just an explanation. dick

So what happens to the lyrics people post on the forum? Do they get added to the database, or does that take a separate e-mail? What about verses to existing songs that get posted? How do you want them?

The technicalities are lost on me but the result is pure magic. Thanks seems inadequate but I can assure you it's really appreciated.

Barbara- The lyrics posted here WILL find their way into the DT, but not always immediately. We have lots of contributors, and a limited amount of processing time. Have faith! Also patience.
