Help: 'The Original Sloth Band'

Looking for any info and recordings by Thr Original Sloth Band. They were a Canadian band that did a lot of old 1930's Louie Armstong type jazz and blues. Had 2 LP's that I know of, circa 1980. Can any of you Mudcatters help? My old cassette finally died. Thanks!

The Original Sloth Band was Ken & Chris Whiteley and Tom Evans. None of their LPs have yet been reissued on CD. Ken Whiteley is one of the partners in Borealis and I asked him about reissuing the Sloth albums a couple of years ago. I think he said something about maybe doing a CD compilation at some point.

The Whiteley Brothers are both very active in music on a number of levels. Tom Evans is now an optometrist.

Hi,

The Original Sloth Band will be doing a special 35th anniversary concert to end the Flying Cloud's season on the last Saturday in May. Will be held at the TRANZAC (292 Brunswick Ave, Toronto). We had them 5 years ago - great night and I believe they found some old vinyl to sell.

Thanks for the help. Doubt if I can make it to the Toronto gig, but it's something to keep in mind. In the meantime, if anyone wants to part with or trade some vinyl, let me know.

I've posted this before, but The Original Sloth Band really changed the way that I thought about music. I had been listening to AM radio up until that point and only knew the popular stuff of the time. They came to my grade school one day, I believe it was about 1971 and started playing music on Jugs, kazoos, washboards etc. I absolutely loved it. It made me realize that there was an alternative to mainstream music and I've since kept my ears open to any and all types of music.

Hey, they even played Teetotallers/Temperance Reel (with trumpet) before it was overdone!

There's a second generation of Whiteleys making a name for themselves too. Chris' offspring Jenny and Dan have had a "kick-ass Gen-X bluegrass band" called Heartbreak Hill for several years, and Jenny is now touring with her own eponymously-named band as well (which includes Dan, a mandolin wizard of distinction).

The Sloth Band were brilliant. Fantastic music. One of my all time favorite groups without a doubt. Once the technology became available my graphic artist pal and co- fan had my LPs converted to CD for our personal use.... complete with original LP covers and detailed text. Sorry but I just can't see finding the time to share this on line and first takers would have to be Ken, Chris or Tom anyway. They never received the recognition they deserved. I've meant to provide them with copies but, like a sloth, I'm just friggin slow. Hopefully we'll be able to catch them live again soon in Toronto. I can't say enough about my appreciation for these guys. Way back when, they changed my life too.

im the offspring of one of the members of the OSB, i hate to say it, but the vinyls, and recordings that are left over are now (to my knowledge) mostly of the sentimental type. meaning, theres not that many OG copys left. although, and not to spread rumours, i have heard of talks for a few years of releasing a compilation of CD's with all the tracks.
im personally, in the market for pictures/8mm film, anything of the like, of the band playing live/hanging out/etc.
if anyone has any, reply at, hateskate@gmail.com

god bless.

I was at Smale's in London in July of 75 when the Original Sloth Band were playing and Willie P. Bennett joined them on the stage. It was the very best musical night I ever experienced.

I have Whoopee, Hustlin' and '78 on vinyl and each side in an unedited digital transfer. Amazing records, great on an iPod!

I'm listening to the vinyl of Whoopee After Midnight right now at my store in Bowmanville Ontario. I'm literally just discovering their music as I write this. Trying to put a price on the vinyl actually.

Yes. There were Three albums that I know of. I wore mine out. Point of clarification, to say that the OSB was the Whiteley Bros. and Tom Evans, is like saying Jerry Garcia was the Grateful Dead.

I have Whoopee After Midnight and Hustlin' and Bustlin', and I prefer the latter. I cannot listen to vinyls right now, have to wait several weeks until completion of alteration of my place so that I can place vinyl player on the right place.

A copy of the Originals Sloth Band "1978" LP came into my shop yesterday...cover is in decent shape, vinyl has a couple small scuffs that don't effect play. $6 plus postage from Victoria for anybody that wants it. mail@teenagedepression.ca
