20 Nov 96 - 05:55 PM (#473) Subject: Lyrics?: The Lollipop Tree From: bhh@flash.net Used to sing this song when I was quite a bit younger. 'Twas the story of a young'un who planted the stick from a lollipop. All I remember now of the words is part of the chorus: And every day I watered it well And watched it carefully I hoped some day that stick would grow To be a Lollipop Tree And another phrase about 'broke those icicles off, they they turned into ice cream cones'. Thanks, Bob |

Every day I watered it well

The winter came, the days grew cold
On every branch an icicle hung

The credit given there is "Music and Lyrics By J.Darion and G. Kleinsinger". There are also some minor differences in the words. BTW, I love this song - I burst into tears on my 40th birthday last year when I played it on the CD given to me as a birthday present by a friend in the US. Jon |

Me and my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop lollipop, lollipop tree. Or that first line might be "Ha Ha Ha, you and me". I may very well have heard the Burl Ives recording at an early age, accounting for the memory. I'll never know for sure! Don |

07 Nov 08 - 04:22 PM (#2487909) Subject: ADD: The Lollipop Tree^^^ From: Reiver 2 I learned this from an old LP by The Limeliters, "Through Children's Eyes." LOLLIPOP TREE^^^ (Joe Darion, lyrics; George Kleinsinger, music) One fine day in early spring, I played a funny trick. Right in the yard behind our house I planted a lollipop stick. Then every day I watered it well and watched it carefully. I hoped one day that stick would grow to be a lollipop tree. CHORUS: Ah ha ha, Oh ho ho, What a place to be. Under my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop,* Lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.* Under my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop,* Lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.* Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight. A tree all full of lollipops had grown in the dead of night. Well, I sat beneath the wonderful tree and looked up with a grin, And when I opened up my mouth a lollipop dropped right in. CHORUS But winter came and days grew cold as winter days will do. And on my tree, my lovely tree, not one little lollipop grew. (crying sound) From every branch an icicle hung, the limbs were bare as bones, But when I broke those icicles off they turned to ice cream cones. CHORUS (twice through) No credits are given on the lyric sheet with the album except "By permission @ Amadeo Music" The whole album was one of my kids' favorites when they were young. Other songs on the album included This Train; The Whale; Grace Darling; Morningtown Ride; I Had A Mule; Run, Little Donkey, Run; and The Riddle Song, to name a few. Reiver 2

It's officially titled "The Lollipop Tree," written by Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger. It was recorded by Burl Ives, Ginger Sands, The Irish Rovers, Phyllis Hughes, Wayne Potash, the Limeliters, Josh White (Jr.) and others. Cultural tidbits: George Kleinsinger and Paul Tripp wrote the "Tubby the Tuba" song and "The Happy Clarinet," among others. Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh wrote the songs from Man of La Mancha. Joe Offer's first actual date with a female of the opposite sex was to attend Man of La Mancha in Milwaukee.... -Joe Offer- |

09 Oct 12 - 05:02 AM (#3416803) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lollipop Tree From: GUEST,Sarah Ann The lollipop tree was a song I performed in kindergarten for the whole school, how I wound up in front of that audience I don't remember. I was a child prodigy, everything I did was blown up to extremes. We had someone who came in to play guitar and sing for us, they sang "under my lollipop tree" (which typically, I would have debated as total nonsense and the lyrics absurd) but I got excited and when it ended I jumped up and sang it back to the guitar player, full of drama and exaggeration. I got applause and was bewildered by it, thinking they were making too big a deal of something silly I actually liked without mocking it. I was known for being outspoken and correcting teachers? They didn't plan to teach us the song, but it wound up putting me in front of the microphone. I'm looking at the lyrics, I knew slightly different ones, but I notice more then one version? I miss that song, I went on to being part of the childrens division of the San Francisco opera company and the female lead singer of an all male band -along with too many other abilities and one of a kind accomplishments, as expected of normal gifted-people. I used to try singing the lollipop tree to my kids, who are gifted as well, and looked at me with eyebrows raised "lollipop tree, mom...?" not the same amusement I got from it. As a tribute, I sang it during a concert with the band after a request for "I love rock and roll", telling the audience it was for contrast. They appreciated it. HA HA HA -ho ho ho, what a sight to see? Under my lollipop tree. |

16 Sep 15 - 03:02 PM (#3737769) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Under the Lollipop Tree (from Burl Ives) From: Joe Offer Hi, Glenn- I'm having a little trouble here, but I can tell you that Burl Ives recorded "The Lollipop Tree" in 1950. I didn't find earlier recordings, and my Burl Ives songbooks don't include the 'pop" songs he recorded. Along with comments about my love life above, you will find that the song was written by Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger. This sheet music is dated 1951, so it looks like 1950-51 is a good date. Ah...I found the copyright record. The recording may have come out in 1950, but the song was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office on 27 March 1951. Publisher was M. Witmark & Sons, New York. Music by George Kleinsinger, lyrics by Joe Darion. -Joe- |
23 Sep 15 - 07:55 AM (#3739265) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Lollipop Tree From: GUEST,Glenn P. I notice that in that record, that there is a notation of "50 cents"; could it be that this be a copyright transfer rather than a record of an original copyright? Strange... Howsoever, it's true that I can find no earlier record of the song in the Copyright Office records... |
