Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: FISHERMAN'S WHARF (Stan Rogers)
From: Bob Landry

In response to Mr. Greenhaus' request for lyrics in the Fantasy Folk Circle thread, here are the words and chords to Stan Rogers' Fisherman's Wharf.

FISHERMAN'S WHARF
Words and music by Stan Rogers, Pro Canada, published 1976 by Fogarty's Cove Music, Inc.
From the album "Fogarty's Cove"
From the songbook "Stan Rogers, Songs From Fogarty's Cove"

Verse 1
It was [Am] in the spring this [G] year of [Am] grace with [Fma9] new life [G] pushing through [Am]
That I [G] looked from the Citadel [C] down to the narrows and asked [Em] what it's coming to [Fmaj9] [G]
I saw [Am] Upper Canadian [G] concrete and [Am] glass right [Fma9] down to the water line
[D] And I [Bb6] heard an old song down on [Am] Fisherman's Wharf
Can I [Fma9] sing it just [G] one time? [Am]

Verse 2
With half closed eyes against the sun, for the warm wind giving thanks,
I dreamed of the years of the deep-laden schooners thrashing home from the Grand Banks
The last lies done in the harbour sun with her picture on a dime.
But I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf
Can I sing it, just one time?
Can I sing it, Just one time?

Chorus
[G] Then [Dsus2] haul away [Csus2] and [Dsus2] heave [Fsus2] her [Esus2] home. This [C] song is heard no [Am] more
No [Bb6] boats to sing it for [Am] No [Bm6] sails to sing it for [Am]
[G] There [Dsus2] rises now [Csus2] a [Dsus2] sin- [Fsus2] gle [Esus2] tide of [C] tourists passing through [Am]
We traded [Bb6] old ways for the [Am] new [Bb6] Old ways for the [Am] new
[Bb6] Old ways for the [Am] new For the [Bbsus2] new [Am]

Verse 4
Now you ask "What's this Romantic boy who laments what's done and gone?
There was no romance on a cold winter ocean and the gales sang an awful song
But my fathers knew of wind and tide and my blood is Maritime
And I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf
Can I sing it, just one time?
Can I sing it, Just one time?

Chorus
Then haul away and heave her home. This song is heard no more
No boats to sing it for. No sails to sing it for
There rises now a single tide of tourists passing through
We traded old ways for the new. Old ways for the new
Old ways for the new. For the new

Verse 1 (repeated)
It was in the spring this year of grace with new life pushing through
That I looked from the Citadel down to the narrows and asked what it's coming to
I saw Upper Canadian concrete and glass right down to the water line
And I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf
Can I sing it just one time?

FISHERMAN'S WHARF
(Stan Rogers)

It was in the spring this year of grace with new life pushing through
That I looked from the Citadel down to the Narrows and asked what it's coming to.
I saw Upper Canadian concrete and glass right down to the water line,
And I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf.
Can I sing it just one time?

With half-closed eyes against the sun, for the warm wind giving thanks,
I dreamed of the years of the deep-laden schooners thrashing home from the Grand Banks.
The last lies done in the harbour sun with her picture on a dime,
But I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf,
Can I sing it just one time?
Can I sing it just one time?

CHORUS:
Then haul away and heave her home. This song is heard no more
No boats to sing it for. No sails to sing it for.
There rises now a single tide of tourists passing through.
We traded old ways for the new, old ways for the new,
Old ways for the new, for the new.

Now you ask "What's this romantic boy who laments what's done and gone?

There was no romance on a cold winter ocean and the gales sang an awful song."
But my fathers knew of wind and tide and my blood is maritime,
And I heard an old song down on Fisherman's Wharf.
Can I sing it just one time?
Can I sing it Just one time?

CHORUS

(Repeat 1st verse)

I have listened closely to Stan Rogers' Fisherman's Wharf many times and have yet to hear the words "Upper Canadian". This seems to be simply copied from bot transcriptions from other websites. He sings very clearly, but I keep hearing "Perkin Eek" (perkinique?) or such "made of concrete and glass" and NOT anything even CLOSE to "Upper Canadian"! Anybody have the ear of Mr. Rogers who could ask him for the phrase - and its meaning? I keep thinking that it is the name of a ship - or perhaps a commercial development... And I LOVE that song!!!

I cleary hear this as "Upper Canadians" as it is also printed in the album's booklet.

Only The Almighty might 'have the ear of Mr Rogers' - he died tragically in 1983, the victim of a fire on board an aircraft.

I'm afraid, Lyrinda, that the problem is in your ear. Stan very clearly sings "Upper Canadian".

I remember a friend of mine first hearing that recording back in the '70s, and responding with some indignation: "That's not Upper Canadian concrete and glass - it's Nova Scotian concrete and glass!" He was right. Stan was a Nova-Scotian-Upper-Canadian who had gotten it into his head that Upper Canada embodied all that was wrong with modernity, and Nova Scotia all that was right about the past. I think he got over that before too long.

'Upper Canada' was the pre-Confederation (1867) term for what we now call Ontario. In the 1970s, it was used in a kind of pejorative way to refer to Ontario.
