Wilf,

It is Sea Lion, as far as I know. There was a movie I saw recently (have no idea what it was) and this little song ran at the end--it was enchanting. I put the closed captioning on and voila! there were the words. Will go a-hunting, though, cuz I'd like to find this one, too. Will let you know if/when I find anything.

Okay, Wilf, here's what I found so far. Called either She Lyin' or Sea Lion (seems to be up to you as to what the first 2 words are as there are several different opinions on this), written by Christeen Shipp and Katherine Shipp in 1939 in Mississippi? Here's a link that will give you the words. Click Here

Sing it once for me! Love that song.

Hahaha, Praise! 'Tis a good one. There's a song on there called "Shut De Do', Keep Out De Debbil," that I'm dying to hear! So many good, old, dusty gems. You know, after so many people (including you) have helped me, it's nice to be able to return the favor. And now that Joe Offer's thread taught me how to do blue clicky things, I can't be stopped! lolol

it's on a CD that I think is marvelous:

RDR 1500, A Treasury Of Library Of Congress Field Recordings, $12.98

Here are 30 of the greatest performances from the legendary Library of Congress recording series. This treasury is an extraordinary collection of America's folk voices -- a State of the Union circa 1941.

Bonaparte's Retreat ~ Rock Island Line ~ Pretty Polly ~ Pullin' the Skiff ~ Shortenin' Bread ~ Sea Lion Woman ~ Soldier's Joy ~ Another Man Done Gone ~ Northfield ~ When I Lay My Burden Down ~ Grub Springs ~ Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down ~ Iron Merrimac ~ Creek Lullaby ~ Coal Creek March ~ Worried Life Blues ~ One Morning in May ~ Blood-Strained Banders ~ Goodbye, Old Paint ~ Lead Me to the Rock ~ Glory in the Meetinghouse ~ The Avondale Mine Disaster ~ Roll on the Ground ~ Diamond Joe ~ Lost John ~ Sept ans sur mer ~ East Texas Rag ~ Old Joe Clark ~ The Gypsy Davy ~ Kiowa Story of the Flute

I think the movie in question is The General's Daughter---I haven't seen it, but I'm told it features several tracks from this CD. Notably Kelly Pace's Rock Island Line.

Available, of course, from CAMSCO.

Praise,

Thank you for your generous offer of sheet music on "Shet De Do'" but I can't read music--not a musician, by any means--just a sing-along-with-the-radio kind o' gal! hahaha I was just perusing that site again and found a very poignant slave song, written in 1862, Virginia. It's called "The Slave's Consolation" but they have it listed under the "C" section: "Come listen all you darkies, come listen to my song..." Put a lump in my throat. Anyway, thanks again--you're a sweetie!

Did you need to know anything about that "Shut de door" song. I was a guest soloist with a choir once and got to perform that....had a great time.

Dear Tchaikovsky,

No, don't really need anything re: "Shut De Do'" but thanks for your offer of help. I had just run into it lately and loved the lyrics. Figures I would find folks here who'd not only heard of it but performed it! It must've been a blast to sing it with a choir. Well, yes, actually, do you know of any good recordings of it?? I'd love to hear it. I've been singing it around the house for the past few days, but it's my very own version and I'm sure it doesn't sound like what it's supposed to sound like!
