19 Mar 00 - 07:59 PM (#197844) Subject: Bronze vs Steel From: GUEST,lloyd61 Bronzed Vs Steel Recently I purchased a set on Martin Acoustic / Performance Guitar strings. For years I have been using Martin Marquis. The difference is in the E (1) and B (2) strings. The Marquis are Silvered Steel while the Studio / Performance are Bronzed Steel. After using the Guitar for a week now, I think I like the Silvered Steel better than the Bronze. The Bronze is a little to bright for me. I'm also not sure about the life of the Bronze strings. Any Comments? |

I believe the Marquis are a phosphor mix, and they have a very bright sound. I am not a fan of phosphur since it seems to react to the sweat in my hand - and I destroy a set in a night. I try to avoid phosphur, as a result, but most string seem to contain some. Elixers have a pretty good sound, and last forever, but I dislike the feel - they seem a bit small and light. I like the Martin Bronze, and I also use the SPs. |

19 Mar 00 - 10:03 PM (#197871) Subject: RE: Bronze VS Steel From: GUEST,Dan Lloyd, I'm not familiar w/ the Acoustic/Performance Strings so for the purpose of this reply I'm going to assume they are the SP (Studio/Perfomance) strings which are Phosphor Bronze and have the bronzed steel E & B strings. I think they are a bit brighter, as you suggest, and I've also found that the strings last longer than any of the other Martin strings I've used. I haven't tried the Elixers yet, I'm being stubborn about the high tech coating business and holding on to that inner need to change strings frequently! Good luck. I'll be interested in other folk's opinions on strings. |

19 Mar 00 - 10:35 PM (#197879) Subject: RE: Bronze VS Steel From: rangeroger I can't answer about the E and B strings as all the sets I use seem to be plain steel.I have used Brass wound strings for the past 25 years or so becuse of the same problem with body chemical reaction to anything else. They are quite a bit brighter than phosphor-bronze but retain that brightness for a long time.I also used to kill a set of strings in one night, but with the brass wound I've gone months without having to change strings.Plus,once they're tuned in they stay there like I had welded the tuners. Part of that is my guitar,but the strings really respond. I used to use Guild special alloy brass,but they have become exceedingly difficult to find.Now I get D'aquisto Brass Masters over the internet for about $3.50 a set.Use them on both the six-string and the twelve. rr |

20 Mar 00 - 01:33 AM (#197948) Subject: RE: Bronze VS Steel From: canoer For the past three years, as a beginner, I just stuck to Martin SPs. They always stretched a lot in the first few weeks, needed lots of tuning.
A Mudcatter suggested D'Addario brand. I tried the 80/20 bronze. Put them on and from the first they never went far out of tune. That alone was satisfying! I can see where the 80/20s would sound overly bright. Due to a great guitar and a poor ear, I don't mind a bit. |

After an evening of playing on the new SP strings I think I can say I don't care for the bright sound of the E and B strings. they seam to buss. It could have been the music (Bluegrass) I should have had a heavier gauge. I have never used Elixir strings on my guitars but have enjoyed them on my Mandolins. They seam to produce a mellow sound, and last forever.

On my old guitar the SPs sounded overly tinny -- but my new D18 just swallows up all the objectionables. Even more so for the 80/20s. (Aren't they cool?) |

22 Mar 00 - 05:57 PM (#199387) Subject: RE: Bronze VS Steel From: Scotsbard Regarding the initial bright sound of strings; the sizes of the strings, and relative size and spacing of the windings makes much more difference than the material. Put "string" and "90" days into the filter box to catch some previous discussions. I'd be the first to agree that some guitars sound better with particular string sets, but always figured that the deck bracing and bridge geometry were more significant than the string manufacturer. (Last I heard, all of the wire was produced in only a few shops, and what we buy is mostly just cut into handy lengths and packaged.) Depending on what I'm playing, I'll even juggle the sizes a little bit, such as dropping the low E from .053 to .050 so that I can rattle it on the frets for a dirty blues sound, or up to .057 for clean celtic base lines. ~S~ |
