Lyr Req: Paddy Kelly's Brew (Tommy Makem)

We used to perform this one, but we don't even recall who we stole, er "borrowed" it from way back when. The chorus is: It tastes as sweet as honey as it trickles down your throat. It just as pure as good ould mountain dew. It would make a fella sing, tho' he didn't have a note. Won't you try a drop of Paddy Kelly's Brew. Thanks!

PADDY KELLY'S BREW
Written by Tommy Makem
From "An Evening with Tommy Makem" Shanachie 52008

Paddy Kelly is my name
Making poteen is my game
And I live away up there behind the hill
Well I can make a drop that’s pure
And there’s nothing it won't cure
It surpasses any medicine or pill

CHORUS: Because it tastes as sweet as honey as it trickles down your throat
It looks as clear and pure as morning dew
Well it could make a fellow sing if he didn't have a note
Won't you try a drop of Paddy Kelly's brew

Well it will cure your rheumatism
It will cure a wheezy chest
It will cure you of the gout and gallstones too
It cures toothache, headache, backache
Falling hair and all the rest
Falling arches, corns and bunions and the flu

CHORUS: Because it tastes....

Any summer day you'll find me
Catching salmon in the glen
Or setting snares for rabbits on the hill
But the nicest thing of all
Is when evening shadows fall
Just to watch them bottles filling at my still

CHORUS: For it tastes....

Now I've a pound or two to spend
And a bottle for a friend
I've got customers galore who buy my brew
At a wedding or a wake
I supply the stuff they take
And I keep a good supply the whole year through

CHORUS: For it tastes....

Now I know you will confess
That the world is in a mess
And the politicians don't know what to do
I can offer them a plan
That will cure the ills of man
Throw away the guns and hand out Kelly's brew

CHORUS: Because it tastes.... (2)

Thanks so much! Now I recall where we picked it up. Barley Bree performed it at a festival in Ohio. Later Tommy played it at another festival. Makes sense. How about "Keep Your Legs Together Comin' Home from the Wake"? This one might also be known as "Fagan the Lodger".

You will find Fagan the Lodger in another thread called "The Wake in Kildare". Recorded by the great Delia Murphy in the 1950s with a variation rewritten and recorded by Sean McCarthy of Kerry.

If you search Youtube for Paddy Kelly's Brew you'll find a video clip of
Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy singing it live somewhere. Nowadays, youtube is probably the first place to search, with so much stuff being put up there.
