I'm looking for a bluesman who has these lines in one of his songs... I can't find it anywhere...

"Tell all the boys down in Southern Illinois, that I'll be coming home soon. Let the ladies know when they hear that whistle blow that I'll be coming home soon..."

Does the singer pronounce "Illinoise" to rhyme with "boys"? Shame on him!

By the way, in answer to Jim Dixon's question, when Big Twist (Larry Nolan) sings the line in the preceding link, he does not sing Illinois with pronounced "s". It's a close, rather than an exact (and incorrect) rhyme.

Right on, Jim Dixon. That should be folk-processed to 'Tell every boy in southern Illinois..."

Only outsiders who don't know better pronounce the s in Illinois.

As I stated earlier, "when Big Twist (Larry Nolan) sings the line in the preceding link, he does not sing Illinois with pronounced "s". It's a close, rather than an exact (and incorrect) rhyme. "

Sure you said it, but the lyrics never should have been written that way.

Hmmm...OK leeneia. I expect you know that rhymes in songs and poetry take many different forms and patterns. They often do not follow the rules in textbooks. This sort of variant however is not uncommon, and not, I believe, considered incorrect, just different. It could even reveal the songmaker or poet's sense of humor. I wonder if it would rankle our ears were it not occurring with a commonly mispronounced place name?

I wish I could hear the whole song. I like what I heard of Big Twist's singing.
I wonder if the original poster will return.

Larry Nolan "Big Twist" was my mother's neighbor when I was born. He took her to the hospital to give birth. They lived in Murphysboro, IL. Big Twist played all the local circuits and finally made it big in Chicago in the late 70's. You can find his music on Amazon. The group was called Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows

Big Twist can be heard on YouTube. I like his song "Too Much Barbecue."
