26 Mar 00 - 06:51 PM (#201830) Subject: Help: Taping old records From: GUEST,Andrew I've got a few records that are 40 years old or so and want to tape them for posterity. Is there a way to hook up a setup to tape them directly from the phonograph output, without going through speaker into microphone to tape recorder? Hope my question is clear. I suppose there are more sophisticated possbilities too, like recording it to a sound file? I haven't a clue how that might be done, but it sounds worthwhile. |

I just put the record on, put the tape in the "record" deck,push record and play, start the turntable, and voila! Every stereo I have ever had does this, but it's getting hard to find one with a turntable. |

Turntables manufactured since that time plugged into a preamp or the preamp phase of a device called a receiver. Your tape recorder plugs into the preamp as well and can record from the turntable by selecting the proper devices on the front of the unit. If your phonograph is just an old record player with no components, check to see if the speakers are connected via cables that can be detached. If they can, you might be able to run those leads into a microphone port. You may get an impedence mismatch but it might work. I used to record from an old vacuum tube radio that way. Of course that was forty years ago. If these tips don't seem self explanitory, you should probably find someone in your area who might also enjoy the material and see if they would like to help. Or my 2-year 20-Classical-Music-records-a-week habit from the library would have been thoroughly squelched! I've taped from more records than I can shake as stick it..just hooked up to the stereo (Kenwood) and all works fine! --Mbo |

If you have a turntable, it should have output cables that can be connected to any normal stereo component system for recording onto the tape deck also connected to the system, as Sorcha was describing. If you have a record player (turntable and speaker/s in one unit), it would take some fiddling with internal wires to make such a connection, and it may or may not work decently, as Bob and Mark mentioned. Your best bet might be to find someone local who is knowledgeable in these areas and have that person look at your particular equipment and advise. |
