I believe this tune is NOT copyrighted. My singing group made a first pass on it last practice and it sounds GREAT on our practice recording! Their complaint is that no one knows what it means. I do know that it is Jacobian. The web has a great Fawkian Site that comes up along with ALL the jacobian mathematics so I come to you MudCats to see if anyone has a translation and the story that MUST go along with this song. Please give me a history lesson and some word translations or somewhere I can go to get it. As always; indebted to you all! Merrillee

Merrilee: If it is the same song I'm thinking of The Battlefield Band recorded it some years ago on their album the story continues. In English. Neil

The above-mentioned threads contain just about all the information I could find on the 'net EXCEPT:

There is a Czech (!) version of the song at http://www.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~rokyta/asonance/text-cze/gillavry.htm -

and a genealogical site for MacGillavry - in Dutch! - at http://www.antenna.nl/~daktari/gillavry.htm -

These are probably useless to you, but it's always fun to marvel at what worders the Internet hath wrought.

Be sure to follow MMario's second blue clicky; Barry Finn posted not only the words to Donald MacGillavry but also a translation of many of the unfamiliar words.

What tune do you have?. The one with the song in Hogg's 'Jacobite Relics of Scotland', I #60, 1819, is probably no longer copyright protected.

And I know there are several variations out there that ARE copyrighted arrangments of the lyrics as well as tune. *grrrrr*

I have the Hogg lyrics but of course the only recording I have is from Silly Wizard. Thanks for all the information. I should have done thread check first! Thanks, M
