Lyr/Chords Req: Do-Me-Ama

This song was redone under the title of Yarmouth Town. I am looking for the older version, and yes, i really want to find the notation as well. Just do better with the written note than playing by ear! So, if anyone can point me in the right direction......

From: Dave (the ancient mariner)

The song is derived from the old chapbook tale of The Squire and the Farm Servant.. Heard on the CD Blow Boys Blow by Ewan MacColl & A.L.Lloyd. Tradition Label. Sorry I cannot give you the chords but I'm sure someone will. Yours, Aye. Dave.

DO ME AMA
As recorded by Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd on "Blow Boys Blow"

As a sailor was walking one fine summer day
The squire and a lady were making their way
And Jack he heard the squire say
Tonight with you love I mean to lay
With me Do me ama dingy ama do me ama day

You must tie a string all around your finger
with the other end of the string hanging out the window
And I'll step by and I'll pull the string
and you must come down love and let me in
With me do me ama dingy ama do me ama day

Says Jack to hisself I've a mind to try
To see if a poor sailor he can't win that prize
So he slipped by and he pulled the string
And the lady come down and she let old Jack in
with a do me ama etc...

When the squire come by he was humming his song
Thinking to himself how it wouldn't be long
But when he got there no string he found
And behold his hopes all dashed to the ground
With a do...etc..

Early next morning it was just getting light
The lady jumped up in bed in a terrible fright
But there laid Jack in his stripey shirt
His hands all covered with tar and dirt
with a do...etc

Oh what do you want you tarry sailor
Breaking in a ladies bedroom to steal her treasure
Oh no said old Jack I just pulled the string
and you did come down ma'am and let me in
With a do me ama etc..

Says Jack to the lady oh forgive me I pray
I'll steal away very quiet at the dawn of the day
Oh no says the lady don't stray too far
For I would never part from my jolly Jack tar
With a do me ama etc..

Hmmm, I've heard this a bit differently, Dave. Same words basically, except that the "Do me amma ding me amma do me amma day" being referred to in a posessive manner;

It's down comes the lady to let old Jack in with his do me amma etc.

Behold his hopes are all dashed to the ground like his do me amma etc.

For I never will part from my Jolly Jack tar and his do me amma etc.

Sorry I couldn't begin to extract the chords. Maybe if I find a midi I can convert it to notation.... I'll give it a try. Margo

Margo, I think there would be a few variations of the song as most sailors would extemporise their own versions. This is the only one I am familiar with. I hope someone can supply the music or chords for Gypsy. Yours,Aye. Dave

The ABC file is available here:http://www.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/abc/DUMIAMA.abc

yet another digital tradition

There are several downloadable programs that will give you chords from that...

The tune given above ("Roud 511; Laws K40; Ballad Index LK40; trad.", not identical to the one to which 'Cruising Round Yarmouth' is normally sung) sounds traditional enough to alert our Shanty Police when it comes to chords.

Certainly we cannot speak of the chords. I did not hear any recording; here is my own suggestion, to be used at own risk:

X:1
T:Dumiama Dingiama Dumiama Day
M:3/4
L:1/4
K:Am
E| "Am" AA "(Em)"G| "Am" A2 G/2A/2| "G" BAG| "C" E2 E|\
"Am" A,/2-B,/2-C/2-D/2 E/2F/2| "C" GEG| "Dm" AGF| "Am" E2 "(G/B)" D|\
"C" E2 E| "G/B" D2 G| "Am" E2 E| "G/B" D2 G|\
"C" E2 E| "G" D-G F| "Am" E-D C| "E7" DCB,|\
"Am" A,3/2 B,/2C/2 D/2| "C" E3/2 F/2E/2 D/2| "E7" E3/2 D/2C/2 B,/2| "Am" A,2 |]

To fit the basically merry lyrics, I took the liberty to use as many major chords as possible, including some (anachronistic) sevenths. Have fun, or ask someone else. To arrange the song for stage performances or commercial recordings, more effort is required.

the chords are a minor and e minor, cruising round yarmouth is a completely different song, however yarmouth town is a variation on the same story , but with a different tune

PS to my post of 27 Nov 12 - 08:04 AM:

Our anonymous guest and any newbies may need the information that those stange lines following "X:1" are ABC symbols. To transform them to sheet music with chord names, you can copy them to the clipboard and paste that into Folkinfo.

Those of you who are only interested in the chords can find them in quotes, e.g. "Am" for a minor. | symbolizes a bar line.
