Lyr Req: Two Little Boys (Country Gentlemen)

Subject: Two Little Boys/Country Gentlemen
From: Mrrzy

I have found the lyrics to this elsewhere on the Web but never of the version that I knew from childhood. Can anyone supply the missing links? Here is what I hear them sing:

Two little boys had 2 little toys, each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played one summer's day, 4 years old, of course
One little chap had a mishap and broke off his horse's head
Grabbed for his toy, and cried for joy when he heard his brother say
Do you think I could leave you crying, when there's room on my horse for 2?
(missing)
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers, our horses will not be toys, and maybe we will remember when we were 2 little boys.

Long years had passed, war came at last, bravely they marched away
(missing) were wounded and dying away
Then came a cry, a rider dashed by, out from the ranks of blue
Galloped away to where Joe lay, and he heard his brother say:
Do you think I could leave you dying, when there's room on my horse for 2? Come up here, Joe, we'll soon be flying
(missing)
Can't you see, Jack, I'm all a-tremble, it may be the flash and the noise
Or it may be because I remember when we were 2 little boys.

I always loved this one, but now that I have 2 little boys who are 4 years old, I wonder harder than usual about the missing pieces. Thanks.

Right above the Thread Name List on the main page are a couple of boxes called Filter and Age. Enter the words two little boys in the Filter box, set the age to three years, and hit Refresh. This should bring you up seven threads where the song was discussed, including this one.

I am creating a direct link to the thread with the lyrics as sung by the Country Gentlemen but I think you ought to check out the others as well for other information.

From: Snuffy

This was a chart hit in Britain in the 60's for Rolf Harris. At the time it was said to date from the Crimean War (mid-1850's). This is how I remember him singing it.

Two little boys had 2 little toys,
Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they'd play, each summer's day,
Warriors both, of course.
One little chap then had a mishap
Broke off his horse's head
Wept for his toy, then cried with joy
When his loving playmate said
Do you think I could leave you crying,
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Jack, we'll soon be flying,
I can ride just as fast with two.
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers,
And our horses will not be toys,
And I wonder if we'll remember
when we were two little boys.
Long years passed, war came at last,
Bravely they marched away
[sorry, can't remember this line - it's about the noise and smoke of the battle]
Wounded and dying lay
Then came a shout, a horse dashes out,
Out from the ranks so blue
Galloped away to where Joe lay,
Then came a voice he knew
Do you think I could leave you dying,
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Joe, we'll soon be flying,
Back to the ranks so blue.
Can't you see, Jack, I'm all a-tremble,
Perhaps it's the battle's noise
Or perhaps it's that I remember
When we were two little boys.

Wassail! V

Subject: Lyr Add: TWO LITTLE BOYS (from Warner & Davis)
From: Pelrad

This is what I can discern by ear from Jeff Warner and Jeff Davis' album "Two Little Boys." There's just a very slight change in wording, but I'll give you the whole thing...

Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse.
Bravely they played each summer's day,
Warriors both, of course.
One little chap, he had a mishap
And broke off his horse's head.
He wept for his toy but cried for joy
When his young comrade said,

Do you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room on my horse for you?
Climb up here, Joe, and don't be sighing,
She can go just as fast with two.
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers,
And our horses will not be toys,
And maybe we will remember
When we were two little boys.

Long years then passed, the war came at last,
Bravely they marched away.
Cannons roared loud, among the crowd
A wounded and dying Jack lay.
Then came a shout, a horseman dashed out,
From out of the ranks of blue.
He galloped away to where Jack lay,
And his voice came brave and true:

Do you think I would leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for you?
Climb up here, Jack, we'll soon be flying
To the ranks of the boys in blue.
Do you see, Jack, I'm all of-a-tremble;
Well, perhaps it's the battle noise.
Or maybe it's I remember
When we were two little boys.
