Looking for the lyrics to a country song called "Five hundred miles away from home". It is not the one listed on Mudcat by Hedy West. Unfortunetely I do not know who wrote it.

This tune, done differently by the infamous PP and M, also has a French version with different lyrics. I am not sure of the provenance of it, but from the sound of it is just an adaptation of the PPM hit. It goes, in part:

Je pouvais t'imaginer
Toute seule, abandonée,
Sur le quai, dans le cahu des au revoirs

Et j'entends siffler le train
J'entends siffler le train,
Comme c'est triste un train qui siffle
Dans le soir.

Rough translation:

I could imagine you, alone and abandoned
In the chaos of farewells on the platform
And I hear that train whistle blow,
And I hear that train whistle blow,
And the whistle in the evening seems so sad.

Rhymes better in French!

RugbyGuy, would it possibly be Ten Thousand Miles?

Check the DT for Turtle Dove and Ten Thousand Miles. I love these words, but they are a little different from yours.

It's fare you well my own true love
It's fare you well awhile.
If I go away, I will come again
If I go ten thousand miles, my dear
If I go ten thousand miles.

Which brings me to a question I've asked three times now and just can't seem to get a handle on it: Anybody know the various versions of 1) A Thousand Miles 2) Five Hundred (or Thousand) Miles 3) Ten Thousand Miles
which use the "shoe your foot" melodic theme? I'm eternally confused on all these songs, but I keep hearing that melody everywhere.

Mary

PS You might even search for A Hundred Miles to find the tune you're familiar with.

You wouldn't be thinking about a country music song of that name... I seem to reacll that it was sung by Bobby Bear[sic]... not suer who wrote it.

The distance varies to ten thousand miles, but you might want to look at "Danville Girl" in the DT. There are several versions.

Two come to mind - or partly to mind since I ahve drink taken!

One has a chorus

Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three,Lord I'm four, Lord I'm five hundred miles from my home.

I don't know much of that one.

The other starts

"Riding on a southbound train

Salty tears are in my eyes

Trying to read a letter from my home

If this train runs right

I'll be home on Monday night

And I'm five (or nine, heard both) miles from my home

And I hate to hear that lonesome whistle moan "

Is that it? If I think really hard I might remember most of the rest of it. It came from a book I had at school, but I think the publishers went bust, and my stepson "borrowed" the book and that was that.

Hey Mbo:

Thank you much. I've heard this song long time ago. Just the other day I was flipping channels and on a public access station I caught this guy singing this song. I believe he was the original song writer. I what you gave me is it - thank you very much.

Along the same lines , , ,

Teardrops fell on Mama's note
When I read the words she wrote
We miss you, son, we love you; come on home
Didn't take me long to pack
Had it all right on my back
But I was five hundred miles away from home

Lord,I'm one . . . etc.

I certainly remember Dinah Shore with her recording of *Ten Thousand Miles*. (1951) Great vocal but unable to find many details regarding this pleasant song.

It's been a long time a-comin' but here's what I have for the English language version and the French. Think I was still in school - long, long time ago when Richard Anthony brought out the French version - "swoon"!.
You'll see that in the English language version both ONE hundred and FIVE hundred miles are mentioned.

500 Miles                           by John Phillips and Hedy West
Recorded by The Journeymen/Peter, Paul and Mary

If you miss the train I’m on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord I’m one, lord I’m two, lord I’m three, lord I’m four,
Lord I’m 500 miles away from home.
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles
Lord I’m five hundred miles from my home.

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord I can’t go a-home this a-way
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way,
Lord I can’t go a-home this a-way.

If you miss the train I’m on you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Mais j'entends siffler le train, {2x}

Et j'entends siffler le train, {2x}

J'ai failli courir vers toi, j'ai failli crier vers toi.
C'est à peine si j'ai pu me retenir !
Que c'est loin où tu t'en vas, {2x}

Et j'entends siffler le train, {2x}
J'entendrai siffler ce train toute ma vie... {2x}

Back in 2000, Mbo posted a link to this text, and the OP said this was the song he/she was seeking. The target of the link is long gone, but I was able to find it at archive.org. But since links have a tendency to go dead, it's best to post lyrics instead of linking to them.

500 Miles Away From Home
Recorded By Bobby Bare

(The chords shown seem to work ok, but there may be some
chord changes missing. The version by Peter, Paul and Mary
has more chord changes, as well as different lyrics).

500 Miles Away From Home
(Bare, Williams)

I'm five hundred miles away from home
Teardrops fell on mama's note,
when I read the things she wrote
She said "We miss you son, we love you, come on home"
Well I didn't have to pack, I had it all right on my back
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home

CHORUS:
Away from home, away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

(Spoken) I know this is the same road
I took when I left home
But it sure looks different now
And I guess I look different too
But time changes everything
I wonder what they'll say,
When they see their boy lookin' this way
(Sung) Oh, I wonder what they'll say when I get home

(Change to key of D - D,A7,G,Bm)

Can't remember when I ate, it's just thumb and walk and wait
And I'm still five hundred miles away from home
But if my luck had been just right, I'd be with them all tonight
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Repeat chorus (In Key of G)

Oh, I'm still five hundred miles away from home

    D7            C             G
I'm five hundred miles away from home
G
Teardrops fell on mama's note,
                           Em
when I read the things she wrote
            D7                C                D7
She said "We miss you son, we love you, come on home"
       G                                             Em
Well I didn't have to pack, I had it all right on my back
       D7            C             G
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home

Chorus:
G
Away from home, away from home
                        Em
Cold and tired and all alone
         D7          C             G
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

Tanks Joe: I did realise that the OP wasn't asking for the Hedy West song, and that that other link was dead, but since other Mudcatters referred to other versions, thought I'd put up what I had. Great that, 18 years on, we now have all these lyrics. (And did anyone mention the Proclaimers......??)

Here's a video of another song, this one Nine Hundred Miles. Listen to the whistle blowing in the voices at 1:30

Minstrels

I don't care for the voices here, but the song is a good one and I like to sing it.
