Lyrics are in the DT. I'm sure someone here will be glad to make you a blue clickie thing.

I would ask a question by the way. I have this song recorded by Dave Van Ronk (on the album «Live at Sir Williams University», in Montreal). The first and second verses of the Dt are sung third and forth in Van Ronk's version. I find it make more sense like this. The song began « It was down in old Joe's barroom» and you understand that it's Joe Mckenny's wife that died. Is there a mistake in the DT or is there a original version that goes as it's in the DT?

Thanks

SP

Simon-Pierre, I don't know what might the original version, but I have seen it written the way you described, and it does indeed make a world more sense. I think those 3rd and 4th verses ("I went down...", "Let her go...") tend to stick in peoples' minds, and maybe that's why they got listed first and second somewhere along the way.

I always have sung it starting "It was down in old Joe's barroom"... followed by Big Joe stepping up and turning around to face the customers and saying 'I went down to the....' , etc. Can't see any other sequence making sense!. Gary, I think you pinned it right.

hi, i'm new here, and this is one of my favorite songs.

I didn't see this posted elsewhere, but the White Stripes do a very very nice version of this on their s/t album.

They do a lot of older blues songs, like Death Letter, John the Revelator, etc. if you're not familiar with them.

Thanks!

I don't know definately but i think it comes from a ballad called St. James Hospital. Ive only heard Pete Seeger on America's Favorite Ballads Vol. 3, but it was played around with by Pete, Woody, Cisco H. (as I learned above) and maybe Leadbelly.

Also, Doc Watson does a great version with his son.
