email me directly

Phrases like the one above show in some threads. I am not in favor of them for two reasons:

1) It happens that somebody asks for lyrics I also would like to see without having to start an extra thread.

2) Sometimes I can contribute the lyrics, but since I have to do it the old-fashioned way by typing them down I would hate to do a work that someone else has already done.

I guess this must have been mentioned before in another thread but if this is so I have not seen it.

Yours Wolfgang

I use "email me directly" so that if the person wants a tape of the song in question, they may e-mail me their address to post it, instead of advertising their address on the forum to everyone, which they may consider risky or an invasion of privacy.

I do however post lyrics here on the forum for everyone's access.

I think if a person asks for lyrics, it's a good idea for them to post their e-mail address. I hate to type up a song and then find the requestor didn't get it. thanks to the wonders of cut-and-paste, it's quite easy to type up as song in your word processor, copy it to memory, and paste it into both this forum and an e-mail message to a requestor. Now, if it's a song that's in the database, I try to e-mail the lyrics to the requestor and post a message in the forum to say that I've taken care of the request from the so-and-so that didn't know how to look in the database or was too lazy to do so .

I just found the words to "She's Katy - Little Lady" posted 24 June 97, after my original request went up 08 June 97.

I almost missed seeing this, had given up looking for it specifically since there had been no answer for so long; & had not happened to check this site for several days now ... and I don't always go back very far, depending how much time I have ... if I'd left my "age" setting at three days & not checked until tomorrow, I could have missed this altogether!

Which is to say, if I had put my e-mail address on the original request, the replier could have simply sent me a note alerting me to check the site for the reply, & I would have known to look there, even if I didn't happen to log onto the net for several weeks.

This way the reply could be both public and private at the same time!

I'm in favor of "e-mail me directly" because it may not be convenient for the requestor to be looking every day at the forum to see if there has been a reply - especially if he seeks an obscure item and does not plan to be a regular visitor to the forum.

Our only objection to "e-mail me directly" is that if a lyric is e-mailed and not posted, only one person gets it. Which isn't precicely what this whole operation is about.

Hmm. ... Let's all think about that one.

This problem arises in many "newsgroups". If I make a request for assistance / information in a newsgroup I usually say something like "e-mail me direct as well as posting here".

Reasons:

1. e-mail direct so that I get the benefit of the groups experience even if I can't join the group for some time (I move around a lot and not all the sites I go to have a comprehensive set of newsgroups).

2. post to newsgroup so that all gain the benefit - as dick greenhaus says, that's the point of most newsgroups

This imposes a slightly greater burden on the person providing the information, but with cut'n'paste it's probably not to onerous.

Just a thought...

Thanks for telling me some resons to use the line "email me directly" I had not thought of before. If everybody does what for example Dick and Rick suggest, I have no problem anymore. And I remember phrases like "I have taken care of that request" that gave at least me all the information I wanted. Cheers Wolfgang
