12 Apr 00 - 07:50 PM (#210894) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Prairie Lullaby From: katlaughing I posted this to a thread back in March. Glad to see you back. Hope this helps: If you will go the Radio archives on the menu bar up top and go back, I think, 3-4 shows and listen, you will hear me singing a version I know, then in the show after that, Mudcatter Kendall Morse called in and sang the complete version. If you would like me to send you a midi file, please send me your email addy. If you join the Mudcat (it's free with no obligations!), you can send it to me in a Personal Message.) I would post the words Kendall knows, but I lost them in an email glitch. Here are the ones I know:
Tumble in bed, my tired little sleepyhead
Saddle up your pony, the sandman's here My mom and dad used to sing me to sleep with this. katlaughing |
12 Apr 00 - 07:51 PM (#210895) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Prairie Lullaby From: Chocolate Pi Is this possibly MY SWEET WYOMING HOME? The chorus contains the line "Hum a tune, a prairie lullaby". I learned it at summer camp in New Hampshire full of New Englanders who had never seen the prairie. Chocolate Pi |
12 Apr 00 - 07:59 PM (#210900) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Prairie Lullaby From: katlaughing Not the one I know as Prairie Lullaby, though the one you posted is a good song, too. Somewhere, in some thread, Kendall psoted more about it. I'll see if I can find it and paste it in here. |
12 Apr 00 - 08:21 PM (#210912) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Prairie Lullaby From: Stewie Jimmie Rodgers recorded it in 1932. Paired with 'Peach Picking Time Down in Georgia', it had the distinction of being the last Rodgers recording released while Rodgers was still alive. It was by a tin pan alley composer called George Brown, a Bostonian whose real name was Billy Hill. Ralph Peer accepted only 'Prairie' for Rodgers when Brown came hawking. He turned him away. When asked why, he replied: 'I'm not that hard up. There's a million hacks in New York, and if I listened to one, I'd have 'em all pounding on my door'. Under the latter name [Billy Hill], after the success of 'Prairie Lullaby', he went to have hits like 'Empty Saddles', 'Last Roundup' etc. [Information from Nolan Porterfield 'Jimmie Rodgers] If Kendall's posting can't be found, I'll post the Rodgers version later. --Stewie. |
12 Apr 00 - 11:44 PM (#210973) Subject: Lyr Add: PRAIRIE LULLABY (from Don Edwards) From: WyoWoman Well, I have another one altogether that Don Edwards did on a CD I have. It's a regular part of my repertoire. and the words are: PRAIRIE LULLABY As recorded by Don Edwards on "Goin' Back to Texas" (1993) When shadows creep across the hills, And purple streaks the sky, when cattle bunch up closer for the night... That's when you hear the whipoorwill Start singin' sweet and high, That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby. The breezes play, the branches sway Somewhere a coyote cries, Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby. When later on the sun is gone The campfire fights the dark, And a million stars are twinkling in the sky That's when you see a cowboy reachin' For his old mouth harp That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby The breezes play the branches sway And somewhere a coyote cries Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby. Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby. I have the chords figured out -- somewhere -- if you want them. Best, WyoWoman |

1. When shadows streak across the hills
CHORUS: The breezes play, the branches sway
2. When later on the still is gone CHORUS TWICE This is a Stephanie Davis song. She's a ranch woman from Montana who plays the fiddle in the Garth Brooks band and is a very talented singer/songwriter who has released at least 2 CD's that I'm aware of. |

I'm a old strummer and I've been searching and searching for chords to this old tune and can't seem to find them. It's the old Billy Hill tune done by Jimmie Rodgers and others (notably Geoff Muldaur). Is it even an easy to play song (you know, open chords and no weird sussed or sharpFlat stuff). The mudcat has plenty of lyrics posted for this tune, but no chords. Can someone help me with this. Thanks. |

Francy, if you have trouble posting chords, e-mail them to me and I'll post them.
