I posted this to a thread back in March. Glad to see you back. Hope this helps:

If you will go the Radio archives on the menu bar up top and go back, I think, 3-4 shows and listen, you will hear me singing a version I know, then in the show after that, Mudcatter Kendall Morse called in and sang the complete version.

If you would like me to send you a midi file, please send me your email addy. If you join the Mudcat (it's free with no obligations!), you can send it to me in a Personal Message.) I would post the words Kendall knows, but I lost them in an email glitch. Here are the ones I know:

Tumble in bed, my tired little sleepyhead
The stars are in the sky.
Time that your prayers were said, my little sleepyhead
] To a prairie lullaby.

Saddle up your pony, the sandman's here
To take you down the Trail of Dreams
Tumble in bed, my tired little sleepyhead,
To a prairie lullaby.

My mom and dad used to sing me to sleep with this.

Is this possibly MY SWEET WYOMING HOME? The chorus contains the line "Hum a tune, a prairie lullaby". I learned it at summer camp in New Hampshire full of New Englanders who had never seen the prairie.

Not the one I know as Prairie Lullaby, though the one you posted is a good song, too.

Somewhere, in some thread, Kendall psoted more about it. I'll see if I can find it and paste it in here.

Jimmie Rodgers recorded it in 1932. Paired with 'Peach Picking Time Down in Georgia', it had the distinction of being the last Rodgers recording released while Rodgers was still alive. It was by a tin pan alley composer called George Brown, a Bostonian whose real name was Billy Hill. Ralph Peer accepted only 'Prairie' for Rodgers when Brown came hawking. He turned him away. When asked why, he replied: 'I'm not that hard up. There's a million hacks in New York, and if I listened to one, I'd have 'em all pounding on my door'. Under the latter name [Billy Hill], after the success of 'Prairie Lullaby', he went to have hits like 'Empty Saddles', 'Last Roundup' etc. [Information from Nolan Porterfield 'Jimmie Rodgers]

If Kendall's posting can't be found, I'll post the Rodgers version later.

From: WyoWoman

Well, I have another one altogether that Don Edwards did on a CD I have. It's a regular part of my repertoire. and the words are:

PRAIRIE LULLABY
As recorded by Don Edwards on "Goin' Back to Texas" (1993)

When shadows creep across the hills,
And purple streaks the sky,
when cattle bunch up closer for the night...
That's when you hear the whipoorwill
Start singin' sweet and high,
That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby.

The breezes play, the branches sway
Somewhere a coyote cries,
Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby.

When later on the sun is gone
The campfire fights the dark,
And a million stars are twinkling in the sky
That's when you see a cowboy reachin'
For his old mouth harp
That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby

The breezes play the branches sway
And somewhere a coyote cries
Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby.
Ah ee oh loh di, it's a prairie lullaby.

I have the chords figured out -- somewhere -- if you want them.

Best, WyoWoman

The Don Edwards' one you mention WyoWoman was written Stephanie Davis and it's a beauty by Don Edwards. For those on the West Coast of Oregon, the Toledo Folk Music Club will have Don Edwards in concert this coming May 24th. Hope to see a few Mudcatters here........Frank

PRAIRIE LULLABY
Words by George Brown*, music by Jimmie Rodgers
As recorded by Jimmie Rodgers, 1932. (Victor 23781)

[a] Shadows slowly creeping
Down the prairie's trail,
Ev'rything is sleeping
All but the nightingale.
Moon will soon be climbing
In the purple sky,
Night wind softly humming
This tender lullaby.

[b] Cares of the day have fled,
My little sleepyhead.
The stars are in the sky.
Time that your prayers were said,
My little ol' sleepyhead.
To a prairie lullaby.
Saddle up your pony.
The sandman's here
To guide you down the trail of dreams.
Tumble in bed, my child,
Little ol' sleepyhead,
To a prairie lullaby.

YODEL

REPEAT [b] AND YODEL.

PRAIRIE LULLABY
As recorded by Stephanie Davis on "River of No Return" (1997)

1. When shadows streak across the hills
And purple streaks the sky
And cattle bunch up closer for the night
That's when you'll hear the whippoorwill
Start singin' sweet and high
That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby

CHORUS: The breezes play, the branches sway
Somewhere a coyote cries
Eye dee oh lay ee (yodel)
It's the prairie lullaby

2. When later on the still is gone
And the campfire fights the dark
When a million stars are twinklin' in the sky
That's when you'll see a cowboy reachin' for his old mouth harp
That's when you'll hear the prairie lullaby

CHORUS TWICE

This is a Stephanie Davis song. She's a ranch woman from Montana who plays the fiddle in the Garth Brooks band and is a very talented singer/songwriter who has released at least 2 CD's that I'm aware of.

Thanks, Gang!...just what I needed.. my friend is very much of a novice at computers & I copied what you all said in an email.. I'm trying to teach him how to get up here, but he has barely learned about email yet, let alone about navigating the internet..Just got to get over there for a teaching session..

All of you have a grand holiday.. and remember, "Music Reflects the soul of Mankind!"...Gary

Hi WyoWoman ,

I did a Google search for the chords to Prairie Lullaby, so I could learn it for my little boy, and I came across your message.
I know it was a few years ago that you posted it but would you still happen to have a copy of the chords.
It would be very much appreciated by an English Dad and Son.

Many Thanks,
David.

Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer do a nice dreamy little number called "My Prairie Home" by a "N. Thorwardson" (??) on their 1989 Sugar Hill recording.
However, I've mislaid both my tape and the words at present ...

Cheers! R-J

The one Kat quoted which is then credited to Jimmye Rodgers is on Geoff and Maria Pottery Pie. One of my treasured oldie LPs. I'm really glad Geoff is on the circuit again. Musically ... well, 'nuff said. I wonder why he has changed the pronunciation of his own last name ...

Hi.
I'm a old strummer and I've been searching and searching for chords to this old tune and can't seem to find them. It's the old Billy Hill tune done by Jimmie Rodgers and others (notably Geoff Muldaur). Is it even an easy to play song (you know, open chords and no weird sussed or sharpFlat stuff). The mudcat has plenty of lyrics posted for this tune, but no chords. Can someone help me with this.
Thanks.

I combined threads, since both are unsatisfied longings for chords.

Francy, if you have trouble posting chords, e-mail them to me and I'll post them. Usually, if you use the preformat <pre> </pre> tags before and after the chords section of your post, it will make the spacing come out right.

Te first three strings in the first fret is part of Fm. In the third fret you add the D and the A string to get a fuller chord.
Or, the purist would just bar all 6 in the first fret and the D and A string in the third fret.
