Song Circle in Utah--can it be done?

Well folks, I've finally taken the plunge and organized a song circle in the Salt Lake valley in Utah. I've never seen a post by another Utahn on the Mudcat, but if there are any out there, please consider this an invitation (as well as to any others who want to make the trip). The first meeting will be in the Borders bookstore three weeks from now, Thursday May 4th, 7:00-9:00 PM. I've advertised it in the local acoustic music newsletter and the community arts newsletter--anything else I should have done?

Hi, Jon W. what town is that Border's Bookstore in? I will tell my dad; he wouldn't be able to get there during the week, but he could spread the word to some of the people they know down near SLC. Good luck and good for you!

Sorry, I forgot to post the address of Borders - it's Borders Books, Music, and Cafe, 132 E. Winchester (6400 S.) in Murray. There is easy freeway (I-215) access to the immediate area - Fashion Place Blvd. aka 280 East from the east, State Street exit from the west.

If you move the meeting up, to the week between the 22nd and 27th of April, I'll come all the way from Brooklyn, NY. Now THAT'S an offer you can't refuse!

Jon, you might also consider finding space in the bulletin board at the local instrument shops, and in the local libraries as well.

Just refreshing the thread in case anyone is interested. We met last night for the first song circle. I was pleasantly surprised about how well it went over. We had a good contingent of bluegrass musicians who seemed to be accepting and eager to learn from other traditions as well as supplying excellent instrumental support. Unfortunately I found out after I booked the venue that there were many folks in an English Country Dance group who had a schedule conflict so I'm going to get another song circle together in a couple of weeks that they can participate in.

I emailed an excerpt from the recent song circle ettiquete thread around to those who had sent me their addresses and let them know about Mudcat so maybe I won't be the only Utahn here for much longer.

Congratulations. Glad it went well. Have fun at them. A friend of mine is moving to Provo, and I may send him over to check it out.

Hey, great, George. Have him go to Great Salt Lake Guitar Co. in Provo and pick up a copy of the Intermountain Acoustic Musician newsletter. I try to have the dates of the song circle in the calendar there. My nephew-in-law came up from Provo for the first one.
