At the risk of incurring the outrage and Wrath of the Patons, I still think the standard version is one of the dumbest songs ever wrritten. Beautiful tune & Tannahill did other good songs, but this one lacks lots of stuff. Still, other verses have saved it...  

Aside from the well-known "Wild Mounting Time" of the Kippers, I've located some additional verses in some obscure publications:

If i were more educated, i would do it, but could anyone collate ALL of the verses that we've seen in the past couple of weeks? Thus far, have seen 17 for the song, and 8 for the satire. Anyone up for this?

I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only person who pictures a big orange and white dog when this song comes up! I can't sing it with a straight face... I'm always thinking, "Go, Lassie! Pick the flowers and take them up to the house! Go, Lassie, go!"

Tannahill had some nice verses, but what the hell, he wrote the original. Caroline's Tennessee version (collected from a Scottish woman, clearly) includes more of the original than old Francis MacPeake did in his now world-famous version. We're far from offended, Abby. In fact, I much prefer the tune of the Tennessee version. It's just that the MacPeake's version was the first one I heard, thus it was the one I recorded in 1959. Ask Caroline to sing the Tennessee one, next time we manage to get together. Beautiful! Then there's Jeannie Robertson's version... Then there's Carrie Grover's...

   I was looking at all of the materials on "Wild Mountain Thyme" over the last four or five years here on Mudcat. Several times, back then, you mentioned a version that Caroline sings that she got from a woman in Tennessee. You've also mentioned Carrie Grover's version. As near as I can tell, you've not ever posted the lyrics to either of these versions.

   I was wondering if you could give us not only the lyrics from, but more information about the Tennessee version. Who was this woman and where and when did Caroline find it? Is it recorded anywhere?

   Also, where do I find Carrie Grover's version? Is it recorded anywhere? And I might as well ask the same about Jeannie Roberston's version as well.

"Braes o' Balquhidder" from tune of 1740 with no words, but with 1740 dance calls to it given, through that given by Jack Campin from a rare book of 1796, and complete text of Robert Tannahill' version (with tune) to that of Francis McPeake, are now given in Scarce Songs 2 file at www.erols.com/olsonw.

The corries do a version with the third verse which goes

(the older tune Bruce gives in ABC format, although obviously the root, is one of those up and down Scots melodies which is at once more 'interesting', but harder to wrap your head around and sing easily....I'm not surprised it has gradually morphed into "Wild Mountain Thyme")

I've avoided direct links, because with long files it can take a long time if you're on a 56Kb/sec modem to get to the particular song, and sometimes I can't get the directlink to work at all.
The browser justs give up trying to find the file's internal link. Maybe that's just my old Netscape browser (which can't do everything, but loads fast).
