Tune Add: The Foggy Dew (Alfred Perceval Graves)

Long ago, I submitted the lyrics to this version of The Foggy Dew to the Mudcat, and it was added to the DT. Yesterday, I noticed that the DT has the wrong tune. It should not be the tune that goes to the rebel Foggy Dew. Today I scanned it in from the old book where I found the song and posted it to my website. It is here: The Foggy Dew - "A wan cloud was drawn..."

THE FOGGY DEW
Irish

    Oh! a wan cloud was drawn
    O'er the dim, weeping dawn,
As to Shannon's side I returned at last;
    And the heart in my breast
    For the girl I loved best
Was beating—ah beating, how loud and fast!
    While the doubts and the fears
    Of the long, aching years
Seemed mingling their voices with the moaning flood;
    Till full in my path,
    Like a wild water-wraith,
My true love's shadow lamenting stood.

    But the sudden sun kissed
    The cold, cruel mist
Into dancing showers of diamond dew;
    The dark flowing stream
    Laughed back to his beam,
And the lark soared singing aloft in the blue;
    While no phantom of night,
    But a form of delight
Ran with arms outspread to her darling boy:
    And the girl I love best
    On my wild, throbbing breast
Hid her thousand treasures, with a cry of joy.

Here is a sound file of the song

Click Here to hear the song.

And here is a corrected link from my first message in April 2000, since my website has moved and the previous link no longer goes to the right page:

Is there anyone else interested in this song, or have I wasted my time on posting to a music thread?

Keep 'em coming, Alice, I'm reading them. Your voice is beautiful...I'll have to listen to the MP3 when I don't have so much buffering.

Here is this version of Foggy Dew at Lesley's site. I'm familiar with the rebel version also. But if you'll look at The Foggy, Foggy Dew also, I love that song too, and am presently racking my brains trying to find where I first heard that song.

Ha! I just noticed that Lesley credited you with the correction!

Hi, Mary. I really like this tune, so when I noticed the DT and Lesley's site had the wrong melody, the need to correct it really jumped out at me. It's a good tune for the penny whistle. I've noticed it in a session book of tunes, but I sure have not heard it sung very much. I've sung it here for people at music gatherings, and none of them here had heard it before.

I've been listening to it for the last ten minutes (It followed me from Lesley's site!) and I love it. I would, however, like to hear it played on the penny whistle more slowly and plaintively.

I like the lyrics, too. I'm partial to that "old stuff".

Hi Alice! It's on my list to make sure the corrected tune gets submitted (unless Joe beats me to it)
