Lyr Req: The Very Thought of You (Ray Noble)

This was an Al Bowley song from the 30's which I heard on radio sung by Norma Waters(on) from the UK. Of special interest was that it was a two part track, the first being a song I'd never heard before, but which was a male role playing at being at an Al Bowley performance - then followed the familiar strains of The Very Thought of You.

Anyone have access to the words and lyrics to the first part of the song please?

Regards, John

Sort of Joe - that's the well known part first brought to prominence by Al Bowlly and the Ray Noble Orchestra in 1934. But it's the more recently composed prelude that I'm really chasing as sung by Norma Waterson, probably on one of her recent solo albums. The first half of the song is a re-enactment of being there when Bowlly performed (I don't know how well he was known outside of UK and Australia) before Norma does a lovely version of The Very Thought Of You. As I recell Bowlly's signature tune was Goodnight Sweetheart. Thanks for the lyrics Joe; we're half way there. Regards, John

Yes, it's on her most recent solo album, where she sings one song BY a songwriter/singer and another song ABOUT them. I don't have it, but I heard it played on Lucky Oceans' radio show last year. cheers Callie

Here's from a 1963 recording by Nancy Wilson.

The Very Thought Of You

-Artist: Nat King Cole
-Words and Music by Ray Noble
-charted in 1934 by Ray Noble (#1) and Bing Crosby (#11)
-charted in 1944 by Vaughn Monroe (#19)
-sung by Doris Day in the 1950 film "Man With A Horn"
-charted in 1961 by Little Willie John (#61)
-charted in 1964 by Rick Nelson (#26)

THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU
(Words and Music by Ray Noble)

I don't need your photograph to keep by my bed
Your picture is always in my head.
I don't need your portrait, dear, to call you to mind
For sleeping or waking, dear, I find...

The very thought of you and I forget to do
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a queen
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

[instrumental interlude]

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

Nancy Wilson does a wonderful job of the song, by the way. It's also on the Natalie Cole "Unforgettable" album, but not with the introductory verse. I also checked it on Holly Near's "With a Song in my Heart," and on albums by Tony Bennett and Billie Holiday. Nancy Wilson is the only one with the introductory verse - and it's the recording I like best. Smooth, like good Scotch.

And one of the best versions I ever heard was sung by Elvis Costello on a recording called "Kojak Variety"

Anybody got any good chords for this song - the very thought of you

reputedly one of John Dillinger's favourites

The Guitar Guy has a set of chords for the chorus: The Very Thought of You at GG. (I've also only got a set for the chorus. I don't know if I have any recordings of it; if I have I'll see if I can get the chords for the verse).

PS to my post - I've got recordings of this by Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. I'll have a listen to them later and see if any of them sang the verse!

is it really a B7 for "ought to do " in the second line ?

maybe I'm not recalling the tune correctly, but it doesn't seem to fit to me .

input required from M.Ted here imo

A favorite of mine. I remember my parents had the Ray Noble recording (1934). Sung by many fine singers through the years, but I still prefer his old Victor recording.
