Just out of curiosity. . .

From: Kelida

Just out of curiosity (which killed the cat, by the way), I'd like to run a little survey of the Mudcat to see what "kind" of people hang around here--sort of a sampling of the social make-up, so to speak. Just some general info on what kind of music people listen to/play, instruments, ages, places, etc. Mostly just so I (and everyone else, hopefully) will feel a little less of a stranger here. I guess I'll start things off.

Name: Bridget McKinney; Cincinnati, Ohio; DOB: 10-xx-82; Blond hair, blue eyes, 5'7", 125; Music/Bands: Celtic folk/dance music, blues, the Happy Daggers, jazz, the Beatles, the Doors, Jethro Tull, old school punk, '80s glam metal (shamefully. . .), industrial, Bauhaus, techno/rave/jungle--pretty eclectic tastes, but mostly I like folk music; Instruments: clarinet, penny whistle, acoustic guitar, key board, fife; Reading material: Lovecraft, Moorcock, Nietzche, Kafka, Poppy Z. Brite, Whitman, pretty much anything; Most likely to be found: at school, at work, at the computer, playing clarinet, singing with my best friend; future career: graphic designer/illustrator.

Peace--Keli

Keli/Kelida/Bridget/Mac, etc., there are several threads here which do exactly what you are asking for. (Nice to know) Maybe someone who knows where they are can resurrect them for you to read and will link them to here. And of course, new people can follow your lead and post here.

Always nice to put a real name and concrete info to people at the Mudcat, I think.

Good also to remember that anyone in cyberdom can read what you post.

Where do Mudcatters Live

Falling in love with Mudcatters

How Old is a Mudcatter?

Mudcat (THE WORLD) Let Us Know Where You Are

Mudcat the world Part II

What does a Mudcatter do?

There are several more that are a lot of fun to read over and can certainly be refreshed. If you type in "Mudcat" in the filter box and set the date to at least two years, you will get every thread which has ever had "Mudcat" or "Mudcatters", etc. in the name.

This is not to suggest you shouldn't have this thread. Most of the ones I linked are quite long, so slow loading, so a new one for additions is a good idea.

Hope this helps,

Keli -

I just refreshed the thread that I started shortly after I came here, on almost exactly the same subject - It's called the Nature of the Mudcat Beastie.

I appreciate the fact that there are other people here, like yourself, whose tastes in music are as broad and eclectic as my own. Most people don't understand listening to Bauhaus and folk both.

Welcome to Mudcat... :)

I must be getting old. I thought Bauhaus was a European architectural school of the early 20th century. Wasn't Mies van derRohe one of them? Or was that another school? It's been too long since my college modern architecture course. But music? I have to confess ignorance. Next thing you'll tell me that Mies van der Rohe is now the name of a musical group. Anyway, welcome, Kelida, and I'm glad you've found the Mudcat. Oh, and Jethro Tull played for my girlfriend's high school prom in 1970. The band, not the inventor.

Aloha,
Mark

plus he is a wench-magnet...

Gee shucks, oh my. I can tell you this much, Mooh is pronounced Mike. I'm 42, folkie blues rocker sort of guy. I fish. I got a part time regular job to augment my musician earnings. I teach guitar and play in a variety of bands and recording projects and one-off gigs. Huge musical upbringing, so I'm kinda this way by default. Christian, unionist, environmentalist, ofttime pain-in-the-backside.

Peace, Mooh.

Mark--Bauhaus was a goth band in the early 80s before goth became cliche. It was also an architectural movement, though.

But in the spirit of openness I'll say that (sheesh kelida and mbo) - I ashamed to admit to 33 with you two around. I have played in bands from funk to punk and have yet to find a kind of music I do not like.

I write occassionally I've even been paid for it but I earn my corn in financial services.

Bauhaus (the architecture) and music have more connection than one might think: Alma Schindler (immortalized in Tom Leher's song "Alma") married first Gustav Mahler, and then Walter Gropius.
"While married to Gus, she met Gropius,
And soon she was swinging with Walter
Gus died, and her teardrops were copious
She cried all the way to the altar."
"But Walt would work late at the Bauhaus,
And only came home now and then.
She said, "What am I running, a chowhouse?
It's time to switch partners again.""

Chocolate Pi (who will admit to occasionally listening to Sisters of Mercy, both the goth band and Leonard Cohen)

And there's a Bauhaus exhibition on somewhere in London UK if you're interested in hearing what it looks like...

Check out the "Profiles" section in the bbc mudcat resources site under Quick Links at the top of the page, and there's lots off stuff about various of us. Pictures and all.

Incidentally, it might be best if people give some inducation of where you are approximately. Mooh for eaxample says he's "a unionist", and that means one thing in Canada, and something else in other places. It's one of those words like "Republican" and "Nationalist", which can have different implications in different places. (I'm not saying all kinds of unionists aren't welcome here, but just that misunderstandings can arise).

Okay, here's the skinny in case anyone's interested... Unlike most of you folks, I'm not a musician but like to listen and still sing occasionally. Grew up in southeastern PA, moved to Chicago at 17, then Boston, now NYC (around the corner from the old Folk City--which is no longer there, of course...sigh). Used to sing in new wave bands in late 70's to early 80's, was a studio back-up singer off & on. Went back to college at 37 and now have a master's in forensic psychology, next fall, starting a master's degree in social work and then doctorate in criminology (I hope). I'm 43, still like to hear Anarchy in the U.K. once in a while, love blasting Mozart's Requiem so I can sing the soprano parts at the top of my lungs, scarin' the snot outta my neighbors!

Keli - I've never been on the tundra, but, from reading the works of Farley Mowatt (et al), I understand it is a very delicate ecosystem - Life is like a snowmobile racing across the tundra. It flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come - I trust your "life" racing snowmobiles was only when it was "snow-covered" - I'd hate to envisage your shape implanted on the underlying bogs...;)

Mark - Bauhaus - well, architecture, art, and a philosophy etc... Germanic ca the 1920s.

Mbo - get to bloody work instead of settin' in this Coffee Bar - or - start a Scott Joplin thread. M'boy, more I read your posts, more I "lak-ya"...;)

MMario - I'm a tired old fart - please explain, what is a "wench magnet" - or is it "wrench magnate"? From what I've read about/from Mbo on Mudcat, I' say he was a "clean-cut" from way-back. From your post, you make Mbo sound like a male equivalent of my girlfriend of 1952.

I called her "Spannerface" - every time I looked at her, my nuts tightened...;)

Sorry, Keli, aint gunna read the rest of the thread, or it'll turn into a rambling SSC.....;)

Cheers - Sam

Like the Spannerface name - if only I could claim that one.....

I'm mad as a bag of haddock, naturaly blonde, do not have a hairy chest, and like cats. I too, scream along to Mozart, but I chose the Queen of the Night aria, rather than Requiem, it frightens the cats. And the child.

I work for the IRS, I'm the human one, banging on the windows with the Munsch scream on my face....
