Song is on Arhoolie CD-314 Rose Maddox "Rose of the West Coast County". I am unable to hear all the words clearly. Also, the chords would be helpful. Thanks, Murray Crow, Damascus, VA.

I swear I've heard Hoyt Axton do it, but I couldn't find it on any of my recordings.

Here's how Hoyt Axton sang it:

RUSTY OLD HALO
(Bob Merrill)

I know a man a rich as a king
Still he just won't give his neighbours a thing
He'll get to heaven someday, I'll bet
He'll get up to heaven and here's what he'll get

A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Second hand wings full of patches
A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Robe that's so woolly it scratches

Some people have them big fancy cars
Swimming pools, fur coats and diamonds in jars
Real silver gates, real golden doors
They'll get up to heaven and trade them all for

A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Second hand wings full of patches
A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Robe that's so woolly it scratches

While you're on earth
You should shine like a star
Brighten up the corner wherever you are
Doin' each day the best you can do
The way you're sure that they'll never hand you

A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Second hand wings full of patches
A rusty old halo
Skinny white cloud
Robe that's so woolly it scratches

No wonder I associated it with Axton, it's one of his album titles. Obviously one I don't have. I remember the song being popular when i was a kid in the 50's, but I have no remembrance of who that recording was by. It could havwe been Rose MAddox, I suppose. Thanks for the lyrics, Stewie.

Hey! Thanks to rich r, stewie, and Gene for all the help! That is the same version that Rose sings. Thanks also, Gene for including the Cowpie web site address. Cheers, Murray
