Help: Hopi Indian saying

From: Ed Pellow

No idea what brought this back to my mind, but anyway...

About ten years ago, there was a poster sold by Athena (here in the UK) which depicted a young American Indian woman standing on a mountain.

Below the picture, there was a Hopi Indian prophesy along the lines of "Until we've destroyed the land, and emptied the seas, we won't realise that we can't eat money"

Can anyone give me the actual wording?

Many thanks

Ed

ah; I found this quotation a few months ago, a friend had it on a postcard on her refrigerator. I wrote it down but have lost track of it. You have the gist of it correct. I will look around at home and see if I can find it this weekend. The last line I believe reads "only then will realize that money cannot be eaten."

found it on the internet. It is actually a Cree saying, not Hopi (logical mistake). Here it is:

Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten. --The Cree People

Found an interesting LONG talk about North Amercian Indian Prophecies here, which you might find of interest, as the Hopi ones figure prominently and in detail.

Peg,

Excellent - thank you. I remember it from when I had a particularly capitalist boss (and was expected to follow suit) who raised an eyebrow when he saw it on my wall.

Kat,

Thanks for the link, it's probably very interesting but the background makes it virtually unreadable. Why do people do that? Thanks anway.

Regards
