Lyr Req: Teardrops Will Fall

Ry Cooder, on his Into the Purple Valley LP, sings this old pop hit and I can't quite decipher a word in the first verse. It goes:

I read your letter and tears filled my eyes, All of your promises "_______" was nothing but lies,

Can anyone fill in the blank? Thanks so much

Frankie

All the words and the chords would be appreciated. I haven't heard that song in a long time but I always liked it.

Refresh

Thanks Mike, I usually sing Baby or darling but I don't hear him singing that. Anyone know who did the original and where we might track down the lyrics? I tried a google search. Thanks,

Frankie

The original was by Dickie Do and the Don'ts (seriously, no kidding) a New York Doo-Wop group.

Linda Ronstadt also recorded this. These lyrics came from her web site. I don't know what to make of the 1985 copyright date. Maybe that's just the arrangement?

TEARDROPS WILL FALL

I read your letter. Tears filled my eyes.
All of your promises failing—nothing but lies.
So I turned your photograph over face to the wall,
And when I dim the light in my room tonight, teardrops will fall.

Teardrops will fall tonight, tears I can't hide,
Tears that I tried to keep deep down inside,
Tears from the love that's gone beyond recall,
And when I dim the lights in my room tonight, teardrops will fall.

I'm going to pray tonight, baby, hoping you will hear.
Maybe you'll right the wrong and dry each tear.
I'll sit alone tonight hoping you will call,
And when I dim the light in my room tonight, teardrops will fall.

Teardrops will fall tonight, tears I can't hide,
Tears that I tried to keep deep down inside,
Tears from the love that's gone beyond recall,
And when I dim the light in my room tonight, teardrops will fall.
When I dim the light in my room tonight, teardrops will fall.

[Also recorded by Ry Cooder, John Mellencamp, & Wilson Pickett.]
