22 Apr 00 - 09:40 PM (#216285) Subject: Who and where are The Bobs? From: Mark Cohen Recently I found on an old cassette tape an incredible album called "My I'm Large" by an a capella group called The Bobs. The album was dubbed onto the tape so I have no liner notes, etc. It sounds like two men and two women, doing some *very* original material. They are amazingly talented writers, arrangers, and singers. Can anybody tell me more about these folks? I seem to recall something about these being the Northern Bobs, while the Southern Bobs were more of an old-time fiddle band. The album probably came out some time in the late 80's. Any help out there? Aloha, Mark |

They were a San Francisco regional group originally with 3 men and 1 woman. B-o-b stood for "best of breed" as in dog show terminology. They were as you said, inventive and amazingly skilled musicians. They went on to do combined shows with a modern dance troupe and eventually split up. I heard them in concert several times and their zanyness and superb musicianship always got standing, screaming ovations. |

I hope the third man will accept my apology for mistaking his gender. Do you know if they made any recordings besides "My I'm Large"? They had a wonderful song about a woman married to a weatherman, who always knew what was going to happen, weatherwise or otherwise. She got so frustrated she left him, and the song ends with him saying, "Don't worry honey, you'll be back." Brilliant, and impeccably done. Maybe next year for Harmony. I sure do miss all you guys. Aloha, Mark |
