30 Apr 00 - 08:14 AM (#220325) Subject: Banjo Review: Arnie Naiman & Chris Coole From: Little Neophyte What can I say? I go out to hear some banjo music and as I find a place to sit down I look up on to the stage and see 6 banjos! I take my seat with a big smile of anticipation on my face. What a thrill it was for me to hear a full evening of Arnie & Chris' banjo tunes. Many of the songs came from their new CD 5 Strings Attached Volume 2. Of which a significant amount of tunes are their own original work. I particularly enjoyed Arnie Naiman's western style 'Gunslinger' and Chris Coole's tune 'First Morning' he played on a 1900 Washburn banjo. We had the pleasure of hearing a tune from the 'One Horse Town' bluegrass band with Chris Quinn. Why do banjo players have to give an explanation for playing in a bluegrass band to make some money? Build up your bluegrass self-esteem boys. Kathy Reid joined in with her guitar for several tunes with her voice offering a lovely harmony to the songs. I give their CD 5 Strings Attached Volume 2, a 'Double Thumbs Up' (inside banjo joke) Seriously, it is well worth buying if you would like to listen to two exceptionally talented banjo players. Many thanks Arnie and Chris. I think I'll go practice now. Little Neo

Awfully nice meeting more 'catters.....around the pink flamingo, er, duck (which Tony Burns painted in lovely 'pink flamingo' paint he got at Canadian Tire). We're thinking of calling ourselves the Toronto Mudquackers! ~black walnut

I cannot say just how much joy this CD has brought me! I have been loving evry minute of it. It is truly delightful; a real treat. Lots of fine original tunes, with some great old time songs, elegantly played and sung. The whole album just lights your heart! Thanks Arnie and Chris. |

14 Sep 00 - 12:29 PM (#297204) Subject: RE: Banjo Review: Arnie Naiman & Chris Coole From: Jed at Work You kow there's a Don Stover tune on this great album called Things in Life. Just this weekend, I was just watching a video a friend sent me a few years ago, that was recorded at a live concert/tribute to Don Stover. Don was someone I knew when I lived in the Boston area, and was just getting started in music. I never knew Don had made such an impact on the music world. He was always such a personable and friendly guy, and always had time for us youngsters. The tribute had Tony Trishka and Bella Fleck and others. It was a great show. Trishka and Fleck did some real "4 handed" banjo stuff at the end of the night. It's sound hard to believe, but they actually played a few tunes that way, just for fun. Good stuff. Glad to see the Don Stover tune on this album. |
