I will be a college student in the Boston area come September and although I love playing and singing with my parents friends, its nice to have a generational feel. I don't live there anymore, so can;t help you with specifics (I'm sure others will post the "how to'find" messages) but there are open mics and jams around the Bostona area, and those are always a good place to start. Try a few jams, and see how they feel (some will be a better fit then others). You'll meet folks, and begin finding your way. Then check out the folk clubs, Passims in Cambridge, John Henry's Hammer in Worcester ... and many, many pubs in between. I think you'll enjoy it! |

Several of them are at the Berklee school of music. They were all brought into tradtional Scottish music by their association with Alasdair Fraser and the San Francisco Scottish fiddlers, and the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School, in Northern California. They have a wide range of interests in traditional music, some are very good step dancers, singers, and some love to accompany singers. They are fun people to hang out with too. Try posting a message on a bulletin board at Berklee. They might not know about the singer/songwriter scene, but they'll turn you on to the Celtic and Bluegrass scene, if you're interested in that. |

There's an unbelievable amount of folk music in & around the Boston area so you could really be as picky as you'd like, including those in your age group. I have been able to sing with Robbie O'Connel, Lorraine Lee and Bennet Hammond, and other folkies around Boston, and love all their music. I would be interested in getting together young musicians of all sorts and trying to put some tunes together. |
