Several nights ago Dave (the ancient mariner) sang this on HearMe and it was gorgeous. Maybe we can request it again! Suo Gan - Welsh words and a beautiful midi by Barry Taylor. Hush Ye, My Bairnie (Cagaran Gaolach) - this midi is sequenced by Leslie Nelson. Scottish words (?) and a translation are in the DT here. Also, there is a link at the top of this lyrics page to relevant threads. MacCrimmon's Lament Here's a midi sequenced by Lesley Nelson. The gaelic words are at George's site above. Cailin Mo Ruin-sa - Gaelic(?) words and another beautiful midi by Barry Taylor. The words are also at George's site. Maybe someone else can help with a phonetic description of these words. The tunes are all beautiful. Mary PS - George, I get the same error message. I never know whether to say yes or no to continue running scripts when I get it - doesn't seem to make any difference! |

Let me tell just a short happening: when my Grandson's were 2 and 4, I was babysitting this one Thursday. We finished snacks, it was 9, time for bed. Don't forget, I have exceptional boys who are uncommonly well behaved and polite. (their parents were taught how to parent). Anyway, they kissed goodnight, went into the bunk beds. About 10 min. later, Jon, the older, came out and ask, "Grandma, Joey wants to know if you would come in an sing?" Do you know what that does to your LOVE METER? This request set the tone from then on for lullaby singing, story telling about our family, etc. PLEASE PEOPLE, sing your babies to sleep everynight. That's what it's all about! And now, on to adding new songs to the collection, and hopefully, I can astound them with a song in a new language for them! |

I seem to remember the group called ABBA (sic) that didn't normally speak English, but they were able to sing a song that was a hit (I Had a Dream). Now, can someone teach me how to do that in reverse? Phoentically is the only method I know of, which I can do, so now, is there anyone who can translate these Gaelic words into PHONIC? Thanks |

And Grandma Marshall, if you need help translating those "foreign" words, here's the Glossary of Scottsh Words put together by John in Brisbane. One lullaby book (Lullabies From Around the World, Follett Publishing Co., 1967.) says, "In this, one of the best-known of Scotch ballads, a mother--'minnie'--sings a double song, a lullaby to soothe her child to sleep and a song of lament, recounting her fears for her sailor husband, her concern for his safety." |

We sang it a little smoother & lullaby-like. But you can't get away from sticking the sweet baba up in a tree & waiting for the wind to blow. Hard. Baba liked "Sha, Shtil" too. Seemed appropriate. But of course, sometimes I'd sing "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest / Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum / Drink and the devil had done for the rest / Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" nice & sweet & the baba would go to sleep for that, too. It hardly mattered which song. |

A friend of mine gave me a run-down of the error he got, which doesn't seem to be the same error that Mary and Grandma got. I had another friend with an AOL browser who did not encounter any error message at all. Very strange. Grandma, I checked out at Lesley Nelson's site, and updated one of the lullabies, An Cóineachan, to add the MIDI that Lesley created of the tune. Check that out. I'm going to check for other MIDI files for some of the rest of the lullabies. |
